Preview - Where's the Hand tool?

I saw some posts in Apple's discussion forums from 6 months ago bemoaning this same fact. Has anyone seen a preference change we can add or a 3rd party script to fix this?:

I'm an architect. I often have to view PDFs of my sheets either as a reference or as a quality control check before they are sent to print or for client review.

I recently upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.8.3 and am now finding Preview to be an inadequate tool. Why? Before, I was able to use the hand tool to manually pan sheets (after I zoom them in to where I can see the appropriate level of detail) to the area I wanted to see. Even with my 26" screen, I would still do a lot of panning.

The workflow was quick and easy: expand preview to fit screen, hit 'Command +' a couple of times and then 'Command 1' to start the pan tool that let's me be in tactile control of what is on my screen. This behavior is similar to how we pan and zoom when drafting or 3D modeling, etc.

Now, this pan control is gone. All I have at my disposal is to use the scroll wheel to pan up/down or use the shift key to go right/left. This has been infuriating.

Other PDF editors I use at work with Windows 7 at least let you have some omni directional control of scrolling when using the middle-mouse-button. Preview doesn't even recognize this button as anything.

I know that Mac OS is trending to be completely trackpad centric, but people in mine and similar professions still need to more precise control of a scroll wheel. I tried the magic mouse that came with my Mac Pro, but it seems to only be able to scroll vertically.

Is the 'hand tool' a feature we'll ever see again? If not, I may have to relegate myself to some 3rd-party reader in windows (via parallels) to do even quick document checking.

Mountain Lion's Mission Control

Last week, I was finally able to replace the last of my rosetta apps and upgrade my Mac from 10.6.8 to Mac OS Mountain Lion (10.8.3). Now I get to experience/utilize all the new features I've been hearing about for years now.

One of these is the way Mountain Lion utilizes spaces. Back in Leopard and Snow Leopard, the System Preferences allowed you to arrange any number of spaces in your preferred grid/linear pattern. It also allowed you to assign Apps to certain spaces by default. I used this latter function extensively. Being able to use the 'Option-#' key-command to toggle between work areas became instinctive and made for a great workflow. It beats the heck out of having to 'Command-tab-tab-tab-tab' between the dozen or so Apps (at minimum) that I have running.

With Mountain Lion, spaces are presented differently. They are presented with 'Mission Control,' lined up and referred to as 'Desktops,' ie. Desktop 1, Desktop 2, Desktop 3, etc. Using the 'option-3' etc. key commands, however, does not toggle to desktop 3. I have yet to figure out the logic behind what space corresponds to what number. So unless someone can help me out, that feature is broken. **Correction: Unchecking "Automatically rearrange spaces based on most recent use," under 'System Preferences -> Mission Control' at least leaves the in numerical order.

However, as far as I can tell, I don't see any interface to assign an App to a default space. I'm really missing this feature. Does anyone have a work-around? **Correction: This option is enabled via rihgt-clicking on the app's icon on the dock and going to options -> Assign to: This desktop when it the corresponding space. That's a lot less convenient than the preference pane from Snow Leopard, but I'll take what I can get.

Lastly, there is the slight issue when using full-screen apps. I would like to be able to have some apps in the same space as a full-screen app. Mainly, I'd like to have the iTunes mini player floating over full-screen parallels when I'm working in windows-only programs. Is there a work-around for this? How about being able to use the 'option-#' command to toggle to the space of a full-screen app? These don't seem to allow this action. **Correction: When dragging a full-screened app to a different position, it seems to be assigned to that space number there after. I'll have to see if this sticks after a restart of the app or OS.

I feel stupid for having asked the questions in the first place, but I'll leave the answers here for posterity.

Is it just me, or has Apple made this whole assigning and rearranging process more difficult?

Things Acting Funny

My late 2007 iMac, running Mountain Lion (10.8.3) has started to do funny things. When I try to import pictures from my camera into iPhoto, the program just shuts down every time. My Canon All-In-One no longer scans properly. Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 also shuts down whenever I attempt to insert a shape into a Word document.

I ran Onyx which responded with two types of error messages (I could not cut and paste them into this posting). One is a list of SYNTAX errors containing statements that my "Library/Preferences/jp.co.canon.if.print.filter.raster2canonij.plist: Cannot parse NULL or zero-length data". The same statement appears for another area of the preferences for Canon. Another line states that there is an unexpected character at line 1 of my user library preferences for com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist. These errors apparently apply to my problems with my all-in-one and iPhoto. There is an additional syntax error in my user library, preferences "com.apple.scheduler7098.plist: Unexpected character >> at line 1.

There are also PREFERENCE Errors which also refer to the same things - inability to parse null or zero- length data and unexpected characters in iphotomosaic.plist and apple.scheduler7098.

What has happened, and how can I correct these errors? Do I need to reload programs to eliminate zero data? Do I need to go into the Library/preferences to eliminate "unexpected characters"? Can anyone help?

Add a library feature to OS X

I'll write this as if the reader has no knowledge of Windows. And I'll try to use both the Windows and OS X terms for the same/similar item.

Microsoft added a feature to Windows 7, and it continues in Windows 8, called Libraries. It doesn't work the way I want, but I was able to come up with a work around to get it to do what I wanted. It also seems most Windows users don't fully understand how the Libraries work.

Is there a utility out there that will add a similar function to Mountain Lion?

For a more detailed explanation, please read on:

In Windows XP, when you opened an Explorer/Finder window, an optional Navigation Pane/Sidebar was displayed on the left. https://www.dropbox.....49.32%20AM.png In earlier versions, there were actually lines showing the structure, similar to the lines you'll see in some threaded views of forums, emails, and newsgroups. The screen shot is the default XP view, but there are ways of getting the lines back. This threaded view idea goes all the way back into DOS.

With Vista, MS changed the view, and in Win7, they added a feature called Libraries. https://www.dropbox.....11.26%20PM.png This view is the same in Win8.

The idea behind libraries is to let the user have "pointers" to various folders on the hard drive. You can consider those pointers as shortcuts/aliases to various locations. For many, it can eliminate any need for any kind of hard drive organization.

When I saw the word "Libraries", I expected the feature to function similarly to a real library. Unfortunately, they don't.

An analogy of what I want to accomplish:

You have to view your hard drive(s), thumb drive(s), or specific folders, as being a real library in the aggregate. The folders represent the different Dewey Decimal classifications. And the files in the folders are the books in the library. The Libraries section of the Explorer/Finder window is the card file in the library. (Think the old fashioned 3X5 cards for this.) The sub-libraries are the category tabs of the card file.

This is how it would work: You go down the street and walk into the library (Open the Explorer/Finder window). You go to the card file (expand the Library tree in the navigation pane/sidebar to show the sub-libraries). Select a category/topic, such as buildings in the card file (open a sub-library called buildings). In the card file, you find all the books about buildings, regardless of where the books are in the library (the sub-library buildings lists all the files about buildings, regardless of where they are and regardless of the other contents of any folder).

Windows Libraries can't do that, as usually implemented. I expected a sub-library to be able to contain only the files I wanted. But, as designed, they won't. You can only have complete folders in a sub-library, not specific files.

That is not what I wanted. After spending considerable time, I did find a workaround in Win7 to get what I want. And what I want is the ability to show specific files in a library. Interestingly, after finding the workaround, I realized you can do the basic Libraries function in Windows all the way back to, and including, Windows for Workgroups.

I'm trying to find a way to create the same functionality in OS X.

Ideally, there would be a utility out there that hooks into OS X, shows up in the sidebar, and works as I would like, not the way Windows works. Or, offers the user either way of working. If not, I can implement my Windows workaround in OS X if I can change the view of the sidebar to a tree view structure.

For this to work, the sidebar has to have a treeview type display.

The following suggestions have been made elsewhere:

Total Finder

XtraFinder

Path Finder 6

Smart Folders

None of the above accomplish what I want, but I did like XtraFinder and Path Finder 6 enough to install both.

For those that sit and cogitate on this, you'll realize I'm creating a very simple relational database using the operating system.
