{font:sans-serif}{size:2}OK
So I am the administrator of my account, (the only admin. and only
account), and for some reason, I cannot reopen a folder (change it to
read and write) that keeps changing back to 'write only'.
1) 'Get info' for the folder.
2) In 'Ownership and Permissions' --> 'Details' unlock the tiny lock.
3) Change everything in each category to 'Read and Write' (was previously write only)
4) Click "Apply to enclosed items" and enter admin password, then click "OK"
5) Now, when I click the lock shut, everything in permissions fades
to grey and changes the settings back to write only (in all four
categories).
What happened? For some reason, I can use 'ownership and permissions' to unlock, one
at a time, the files INSIDE of this folder.. which makes this even
weirder.

I'd have to first ask about the particular folder.
Was it created from the Finder?
What's in the folder?
Was the folder created by another application?
If you created another user - does the same thing happen when in the new user?

It's just a normal blue folder (Command shift N" to create one on the desktop)

it has documents in it.

I might have chnaged something whan i was in there, in Get Info, with the permissions, ownershiop, access, read and write, whatever.. .., but all the ownership in Get Info lists my account name, and not a different name.. so i dont see what the problem could be. I would not be able to access the folder from the separate guest account, (which i never use anyway) because i never granted the guest user any access privelidges higher than my own..

-Hi,

Had a similar problem and ended up changing the name of the folder w/o any spaces. Might be worth a try even if you have NO spaces and run Repair Disk Permissions.

update..

I changed one of files inside the folder, and it opened and was conveniently placed on my desktop, but

every other file inside the folder disappeared.. but the folder is still there on the desktop

can you believe it? glad i had a backup.. needless to say i think this is the last time i try and use this OSX feature

WHO KNOWS what else i could lose.

It woud be nice to know what NOT to do with this whole permissions thing.

All i want to do is protect a folder.

Sometimes those permissions 'can' cause havoc w/ a folder. Seen it before. Just a suggestion: For those files I don't want anybody to see I place THAT particular folder on a thumb drive, but close by for quick access.

I can't fix what's wrong with your folder, but if you want to protect you stuff from prying eyes, check into password protected disk images. Disk Utility can create these. This might be overkill, but I thought I'd share my 2¢.
