Anna,
I'm not familiar with the software you mentioned. However, since its free, give it a try. I'm also not familiar with all of the brands of VCR/DVD recordable decks that are out there. Maybe check Consumer Reports.
Best regards,
Jim

Anna, what outputs does your Hi-8 player have? If they are standard
RCA jacks (1 video and 2 audio), you can plug it into a DVD recorder
from WallyWorld (or wherever) inexpensively.
Getting the output DVD into a Mac for editing is a job MPEG Streamclip
does nicely.

I joined this forum because I too have a stack of Hi8 tapes that I want on DVD- can you just go rent a DVD recorder and where do you find those? would I have to buy a fire wire cable for my Hi-8 camcorder? once my tapes are on DVD, can I edit things out or do I have to edit them before I convert them?
How do I do that?
