Some time back, Apple changed the way the Eject key works, because people were touching it inadvertently and opening their disc tray at inoportune times. They changed the software so the user has to hold the Eject key down for half a second or so before the disc tray will open (I'm talking about an iMac G4 800 here). And I think (not sure - I'm away from my Mac now) that it opens when the key is released.
This seems to have carried over to other uses of the Eject key, like forcing system sleep, and now forcing display sleep. Just takes a little getting used to.

Brilliant!! Thanks so much for the tips! Your personal tips on Safari, etc. are amazing. I want to buy a new Powerbook just to use MultiClutch now!

Ok, just stumbled on this hint a bit late, and started playing around with other <modifier>-<Eject> keys in Snow Leopard. Danger Will Robinson!
Turns out <command>-<option>-<Eject> triggers an immediate system restart. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 (Didn't ask me if I wanted to, just did it!). What is interesting is that I have a Firefox plug-in that saves my FF session when I quit (Tab Mix Plus), but when I started FF back up after the reboot, it acted as though my session didn't get saved. I'm not going to test it now, but I'm afraid this key-combination just kills all applications, without asking to save documents. Wow, that's dangerous, if it's true.
