MacBook Pros tend to run a bit warm... Likely you've got something running that's really digging into your resources. You should check out iStat Pro, it'll give you basic information on your system such as processes, RAM and CPU usage, as well as temperatures. I've noticed that when I'm running heavy programs I get up to about 170?F though normally it's somewhere between 100-140?F.

Also it depends on where you're setting it. If you have it your lap or resting on your bed or somewhere where it won't get a lot of air flow and the vents might be blocked to some extent your laptop will heat up much faster. Though if this is happening on a flat table and you are reading temps in excess of 170?F something is likely up.

Use iStat Pro or Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder) to see if some process is using up a lot of resources. Look specifically for CPU usage.

Also, if you just updated your RAM yourself, double check to make sure the chip is compatible and not bad. Easiest way to do this is to remove the chip and see if the issues you're having go away.

The F3 Issue is interesting....

When did you get your MBP and did you Manually assign an action to F3?

I haven't assigned anything to F3 yet so it is essentially factory spec (minus the fact that I set it to mute only when combined w/ the fn button) so all it does is mute (fn+F3) and Nothing (F3)

I'm tempted to say it may be the new RAM but I'm not sure (follow Dougoftheabaci's advise on checking the RAM type).

Also, I've never had Heat be an issue in the region that you describe. MBPs are notorious for heating up quite a bit, but I've only experienced heat in the region more or less beneath the keyboard under the fans.

Just to be sure, are you actually using a MacBook Pro? Maybe a regular MacBook or even a MacBook Air.
I only ask this because the MBP's F3 Button doesn't activate Expose (viewing of all open apps and windows) by default.

Since this is your first post here, I can only assume that you're new to Macs (Then again, I have only a few posts but I'm relatively well versed with Apple gear ^_^)
