The only way you can view word docs and excel spreadsheets on an iPhone is if you store them in Google Docs online and read them there.

why not wait until the next version 1.5 of the iPhone
comes out? It's sure to have things like this in there.

Thanks. I intend to wait. I've heard June for next iteration. Hopefully 3G, too.

Don't listen to those other twits. If you have an iPhone all you need to do is download a program of appTap developed by Erica Sadun that allows you to easily view pdfs. I check out pdfs all the time on my phone. Even ones that I get through email.

you don't need to jailbreak or download anything if all u want is PDF, Word documents and Excel

the person above doesnt know what hes talking about

the text below is from apples website

mail (and safari) on the iphone support all thsee file types (even the Office 07 files)

"Open an attached file
You can view or read some types of files and images attached to messages you receive. For example, if someone sends you a PDF, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel document, you?ll be able to read it on iPhone. Tap the attachment. It downloads to iPhone and then opens.

You can view attachments in both portrait and landscape orientation. If the format of an attached file isn?t supported by iPhone, you can see the name of the file but you can?t open it.

iPhone supports the following email attachment file formats: .doc, .docx, .htm, .html, .pdf, .txt, .xls, .xlsx"

As jozen said, the iPhone does that already without any hacking or 3rd party apps/services. My work emails our schedule out every week as a PDF and I view it just fine on my iPhone. The only downside is that these attachments aren't saved on the iPhone, so you have to re-download them each time you need to view them (at least in my experience) which can be a bit of a pain over EDGE.

There is not yet a way to edit Word or Excel files, although tMicrosoft could develop an iPhone version of Word or Excel, or a third party could, or Apple could write a mobile iWork.
