Sounds like the 3GHz iMac isn't worth the extra £120. I'm going to buy the 2.8GHz and spend the extra £120 on upgrading the hard drive to 750GB and getting 4GB of RAM (not from Apple). Thanks for the review MacWorld.

Our graphic school has 100 iMacs, but none of them are the new ones. Why, while we'd love to have the greater performance, we can't put up with the glossy screens. Color correction and color management are critical to the graphic professional and you can't do that with the over saturated glossy screens.
In addition, as a professor, it is very difficult to help students when you can't see the screens unless you are at the same angle that they are looking at it.
So, please Apple, give us a choice!!!

I am seriously thinking of getting the 24", 3.06GHz iMac but I don't really need a second iMac right now. Would love one because I do lot's of Photo and video work for hobby.
I've heard some, about the New Intel Nehalem architecture, that is coming in 2009. Does anyone have some good sense if that architecture will provide "significant" speed bump then, over this latest model?....Thanks

The screen glare is prominent. Engadget has some screen shots:
http://www.engadget....marking/778575/
I suspect that even if the screen doesn't face a window - for example the iMac is in front of a window with the back of the iMac facing outside - whatever is illuminated in the room will also reflect on the screen. And the same effect happens at night or a windowless room as the screen will act as a mirror for room lighting too.
I was planning on buying an iMac if the fixed the screen glare - but they didn't.

Having used the first-generation aluminum iMac on a daily basis in a previous "life," and having used the new iMacs for this review, my experience with the screen glare/reflections is that you learn to look through it. It took a while to get used to seeing myself all the time as I worked, but I eventually "got over myself." I was also able to position the iMac to cut down glare, but I understand that not everyone has this freedom.
In our briefing with Apple, we asked about the glossy screen and their thoughts about matte. They said that customers favor the glossy screen. FWIW.

This article and the comments are another excellent reason Apple should come out with a midi tower model, so that professional users can select their own monitor. As a graphic designer, color predictability is key, so working with a 6-bit monitor is out of the question. The glossy glass screen also makes colors seem more saturated, which is fine for home or office use but not design work.
Apple: Bring us a midi tower so we can use a separate Cinema Display with it. Pro users need pro monitors and not glossy glass.

Please include ease of hardware service in future Macworld articles and reviews. Ease of service is a serious issue that been ignored for far too long. Technicians and IT departments have to struggle with this stuff every day, and are becoming increasingly frustrated by Apple's complete disregard for ease of service. Ease of service directly affects customers. What good is having a shiny new iMac on your desk if nobody wants to repair it?

to back up what rloyola said, the screen glare really isn't a problem and the color is actually better on the aluminum iMacs than previous models. We use these in a graphics environment and color accuracy is important.

Ease of hardware service is called AppleCare. :) OR whatever Apple has for businesses.
And didn't CRTs have glare? I guess only mine did.
Yeah for graphics professionals it seems Apple definitely leaves a hole in their lineup. If you want a vid card and want to choose your own monitor you need to purchase a $2500 Mac Pro.
I guess though for graphics pros they could buy a 20" iMac. Take the stand off. Place it face down on their desk. Purchase a monitor of their choosing and place it on top of iMac. Wa la. Headless Mac.

I just got my 24" 2.8 yesterday (latest issue) and it really is stunning. The monitor is georgeous to behold.
I have just completed migration from a Tiger G4 Tower without using the assistant (all clean installs), and with the exception of a quark 7 printing bump, getting up and going in a pro print/web production department has been very smooth.
Running with 4GB of RAM MacBench shows a general 3x speed increase over the G4 DP1.42 2 GB, and 50% over our DPG5 3.0 2 GB.
I sit near a window, so thankfully glare is not an issue. Quite the opposite, the color is rich and like I said before georgeous.

Oh I have a 20" iMac and like it. I can ignore the glares and I think I would I go glossy again. Everything pops more.
There is a gradient problem. I suppose it's related to the viewing angle, but if I view the 20" screen straight on without moving my head, just my eyes, well an orangle color at the very top of the screen is yellow at the very bottom. In practice it's not really that noticeable, but I can see where anyone that matches color would be annoyed. But I suppose for those folks the Apple Cinema Displays are what they should be using.
