Here and on the MacWorld Podcast you have often refered to the 3.08 as a Build-to-Order item.
Since it is one of the standard configurations on the Apple Store I have to wonder why you keep saying it is BTO.

Apple sometimes puts together a top performing model to make it easier to order, but which isn't actually a standard config. If you look at the bottom of the iMac Tech Specs page, you'll see that model is not listed as a configuration, and the 3.06GHz processor and upgraded graphics processor as BTO options.

Yes, in looking at that Tech Spec's page it is clearly listed as CTO.

But, on the order page it is listed as one of the four configurations with no distinction from the other three.

It wouldn't really matter except for Apple's seemingly silly or at least outdated return policy:

"Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival "

I don't know if that ever comes up but would make for an interesting discussion with Apple Sales if it did.

Hey French boy...or artist if you prefer. I went through the whole post finding valuable comments and opinions but you keep coming back with your personal theories on the matt VS glossy with no valid arguments. Please keep in mind that there are people like me that prefers glossy screens, they simply look better to my eyes. I am not stupid for that reason but simply different. Try to understand that there are people with different needs than you....if you need specialized equipment, why are you looking in general usage computers? Imac is for the mass and the trends are going for glossy. Now for the super special artist you are, there is a computer just made for you, the Mac Book Pro.

Sorry if it sounds harsh but I had the comment. Cheers!

(By the way, I am also French hahaha)

DEAR french man ! I do have a mac book pro 17 inches with a beautiful semi mat screen and i love it !That is why i am sad to not be able to use a 24 inches Imac with te same screen ,as i found the Imac slick simple and great ! Of course i do know i can buy a Big screen etc etc . But the first generation of Imac did have choices of screen ! Glossy and Mat ,and believe me for people who look many hours on their screen ,Mirror effects are very disturbing! YES the Imac is for mass market but the machine being so good, it is a pity professionals can't use it too (and as you know many others complain, i am not the only one ) .Bests regards. jean sobieski. (not hiding) PS monsieur french Imayan you can go and see my work at www.jeansobieski.com i apreciate critics they do make move ideas and art ! Nice to talk with you anyway

Sorry you are so put off by the screen.

I recently purchased the 24" and love it. I never had a display that did such a good job of displaying pure black. And, the text is stunning!

BTW, on my last iMac I used an outboard 20" ACD and thought I was going to use the same one with this 24" but I find the text performance of the iMac is so superior to what I used to think was great on the 20" ACD that I decided the difference was annoying so I put the 20" on eBay.

Incidently, I don't remember Apple ever offering the choice of Glossy or Matte on the iMac. MBP, yes but not the iMac.

As a professional that uses his computer constantly I don't understand why you don't buy a display you like and hook it up to the iMac.

I have the 20 inch aluminum imac; with 2.6 gigs and 4gig ram. I love the speed and performance. I noticed the glare in the store; they
said it was just the store lighting. I have the monitor face; facing a back wall; and if the background is black, or if front row is being used;

there is loads of reflective glare. Yes I can see a lamp (looking at an angle) and I can certainly see my reflection. It is a bit of an issue; lights can be dimmed; but I don't

know what Apple was thinking when they went glossy. Its a bit dissapointing; on what would have been an otherwise perfect machine.

I can only conclude that Jobs was having an affair with a female executive manufacturer of the glass company; but that is using polite language...

UPDATE: The "solution" I found; was called "moving my lamp"; however I'll still have to enjoy looking at my reflection when using Front Row....

YES YES! i still can't figure why Monsieur S Jobs who appears to be and until now who was a man with taste knowledge ,invention creativity etc etc allowed his corporation to make a so negative screen on such a great machine ! yes may be he is in love or success went up his head and he just care about glossy money ! as i wrote before i did try this computer( 24 inches),and sadly bring it back to the store ! The conclusion even smart corporation have" accidents de parcours " but what astonish me is the fact of so many articles negatives on this glossy screen !always on the minus side oppose to the plus ,on so many newspapers all over the world ! and APPLE does not care !!!!!!!!!!!!! jean sobieski

to be fair; a browser page which is bright looks o.k. Assuming it facing a blank wall (take your pictures off).

As with all things computer; there is a solution somewhere; I tried silicone "anti glare sheeting", total waste; but out there on the web there

must be some polorizing sheet film. I would not even be surprised if there is some software you can download; that electronically diffuses

the pixels of the screen. Sort of like anti noise headphones. Please post any software or hardware solutions.

I really hope for a matte (or antireflective glass) option soon! I know many people who would by an iMac if it get's that option again and I really can't recommend that screen like it is now to anyone. And maybe Apple could bring the brightness down to a normal level too when they are at it. One can dream....

As I have said previously, I like the display as it is but obviously a lot of people don't.

Since the surface you are looking at is not the screen as such but actually is a sheet of glass covering the screen, I wonder if Apple or a smart third party supplier could make a replacement matte glass cover?
