Since it is one of the standard configurations on the Apple Store I have to wonder why you keep saying it is BTO.
Apple sometimes puts together a top performing model to make it easier to order, but which isn't actually a standard config. If you look at the bottom of the iMac Tech Specs page, you'll see that model is not listed as a configuration, and the 3.06GHz processor and upgraded graphics processor as BTO options.

But, on the order page it is listed as one of the four configurations with no distinction from the other three.
It wouldn't really matter except for Apple's seemingly silly or at least outdated return policy:
"Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival "
I don't know if that ever comes up but would make for an interesting discussion with Apple Sales if it did.

I recently purchased the 24" and love it. I never had a display that did such a good job of displaying pure black. And, the text is stunning!
BTW, on my last iMac I used an outboard 20" ACD and thought I was going to use the same one with this 24" but I find the text performance of the iMac is so superior to what I used to think was great on the 20" ACD that I decided the difference was annoying so I put the 20" on eBay.
Incidently, I don't remember Apple ever offering the choice of Glossy or Matte on the iMac. MBP, yes but not the iMac.
As a professional that uses his computer constantly I don't understand why you don't buy a display you like and hook it up to the iMac.

said it was just the store lighting. I have the monitor face; facing a back wall; and if the background is black, or if front row is being used;
there is loads of reflective glare. Yes I can see a lamp (looking at an angle) and I can certainly see my reflection. It is a bit of an issue; lights can be dimmed; but I don't
know what Apple was thinking when they went glossy. Its a bit dissapointing; on what would have been an otherwise perfect machine.
I can only conclude that Jobs was having an affair with a female executive manufacturer of the glass company; but that is using polite language...
UPDATE: The "solution" I found; was called "moving my lamp"; however I'll still have to enjoy looking at my reflection when using Front Row....

As with all things computer; there is a solution somewhere; I tried silicone "anti glare sheeting", total waste; but out there on the web there
must be some polorizing sheet film. I would not even be surprised if there is some software you can download; that electronically diffuses
the pixels of the screen. Sort of like anti noise headphones. Please post any software or hardware solutions.

Since the surface you are looking at is not the screen as such but actually is a sheet of glass covering the screen, I wonder if Apple or a smart third party supplier could make a replacement matte glass cover?
