Im optimistic there is a solution. I did NOT return the computer because its a great machine. But Im confident there is a solution somewhere........

Oh the screen is sexy; but artists and designers don't like glare. Its worse than chalk screeching on the board. We want to look at the image

and not a distorted reflection of the window behind us. Some can overlook it; but artists _see it and it hurts their head and eyes and

ruins things for them. ;-)

After much experimenting; yes there are things you can do to reduce the glare; move light fixtures, activate dimming switches; etc.;

and somewhere out there is some polorizing film that actually must work...... stay optimistic and post anything you find.... :8}

While all you unimaginative nerds spend time blaming Apple for making the screen so shiny, some of us just went out and applied a $2.00 sheet of 3m matt finish window film over the screen...Voila (that's French for you particulary whiney French geeks.)

Can't anyone think and act anymore???

Arrrgh!

I have and what vanwolfy says is true.
On the other hand there are plenty of people who pride themselves on not being able to tell the difference (Butter? Margarine? Meh!) or can convince themselves into seeing/not seeing whatever they want. (Whole nations pride themselves on that).
If you were here I could rub your nose in your reflection, but then you'd just say it is good to see whether you have something in your teeth.
It can be SO embarrassing when the client comes in for a color check and all he/she sees is your green spinach. The good side is he/she won't notice the color on the job.

BRAVO IT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS ALWAYS SAYING ,AND SOME PEOPLE NEARLY INSULT ME ,IN FACT IT WAS FUN , it was like if i was an adversaire fighting apple ,in fact it is the contrary ,i would love the 24 inches if apple will respect us artists and not ONLY the mass market,who loves everything glossy,brain wash ,without giving us possibilities of choice (i have a 17 inches portable with a correct screen with the possibilities of choice when i bought it,and i work very well with it ,web site :www.jeansobieski.com )

It only takes one person to notice the Emperor has no clothes and the whole sham collapses.

The real issue is not whether it is true or not but whether you dare to break ranks and make everyone else look stupid.

That is unforgiveable and will really turn the mob on you.

Well I just got the 24" iMac this past Wednesday from the 'black Friday' online store sale at Apple.

I was very surprised about the 'screen glare' comments here - I've put this thing in all sorts of lighting, angles, etc. - and I have never been able to see my reflection on the screen glass. ??? Certainly nothing approaching the cellphone pic the other poster put up.

Maybe Apple got another glass supplier for the screen covering or something since the summer.

I don't know if it is a technical limitation or what, but the brightness control does seem to need a bit of work to darken the screen below the current limitations of that Display pref panel in Leopard - but that's a quibble.

I have to give this one two thumbs up - a very winning Apple design.

Have you ever heard of turning the lights off or maybe getting some blinds? I like the work with the lights off anyway. I'm looking forward to getting 2.8 24incher soon!

I just got the iMac (April 2008) 24" 2.8 GHz model on clearance for $1199 from J&R Music and Computer World. They were one of the last vendors to still have new stock in inventory (They are already gone now...they didn't last long at that price!). Got it with no tax and free shipping too!

These people complaining about the glossy screen obviously have never seen one outside of a store before. They don't own them and their complaints are full of BS! I LOVE the glossy screen! It sure beats the matte screen on my iMac G5 20" (iSight) model! The colors are more vibrant and the blacks are really black! I have a ceiling fan with a light kit directly behind my head with no reflection at all. The window in my room is in front of me, to the side. I don't even see a reflection of myself in the screen.

The problem with the matte screen was a grainy look due to the screen itself. (Not so bad on my old Cinema Display, but clearly obvious on the iMac 20"). Most notable on a white background, like a web page or Word document. This always made text slightly fuzzy on the screen. Not so with the glossy screen! The white background is solid white and text is really sharp. Far easier on my eyes.

Also, the screen is so much brighter than the iMac G5! Wow! Really makes a difference. I also have a desk light, a halogen type. Late at night I use the desk light, which is next to the iMac, just in front of the screen to the side. When I turn it on, I see the actual reflection of the light, with no diffusion. I can easily move it out of the way, but the small reflection of the light is far less bothersome than iMac G5. The matte screen caused the light to diffuse across the screen and wash it out. This doesn't happen on the glossy screen.

So it is obvious the complainers don't own an iMac with a glossy screen. If they actually had one in their home, they wouldn't be complaining about it.
