Any word on whether the OTA calendar sync work with iCal server (or other CalDAV servers)? I really don't care about the Exchange?active Sync support (my employer doesn't pay my phone bills, they don't get to email me on my phone), but I have iCal server set up on my home mini and it would be great to be able to finally be able to edit CalDAV calendars on my iPhone.

I asked two different AT&T store managers this question and was told YES. You are able to open a new iPhone account and then at a later date, transfer your old cell phone number to that iPhone. You then relinquish the "new" number you received with the iPhone.

i'm pretty heated. we switched to at&t in may in anticipation of the new iphone when our contracts were up with verizon and sprint. we had to do it then to avoid getting stuck for another 2 years. we've been waiting it out with our cheap-o phones for 2 months only to learn that we aren't quite new enough to get the $199 pricing despite the fact that it's the ONLY reason we switched to at&t. surely we aren't the only people out there peaved about this. come on apple, show your loyal customers some love.

No GPS -
This article is misleading. The iPhone 3G does not have GPS. Read the Tech Specs and see that Apple refers to it as “Assisted GPS”. Assisted GPS is not GPS. This phone has no GPS receiver. It is not able to lock on to GPS satellites and determine its position. Assisted GPS relies entirely on information passed to it from mobile phone towers and wifi networks. It is far less accurate than GPS. The best that Assisted GPS can do is triangulate itself based on known locations of three or more cell phone towers and then estimate its position. In areas with little cell phone tower coverage, Assisted GPS will not work at all.

Hey, thanks much for that. Very good news. (I did ask a rep at an Apple store last week but he didn't know.) Did you get any indication as to how this will be done? Will I do the switchover myself from home? Phone call to AT&T? Visit an Apple or AT&T store?

Thanks again

Sorry - this is just not true.

Assisted GPS absolutely IS real GPS, with a bonus. There is a GPS receiver in the new 3G iPhone (yes, it uses satellites). It just has the added bonus of using the info you are describing (cell towers and wireless hotspot locations) to add to the location info, for example when you are inside.

What you are describing is what is in the 1st Gen 2G iPhone already.

This has been poorly described in the press, I will give you that.

The reason no one is touting turn-by-turn directions yet for the iPhone is that Apple told D.Pogue that there is not enough antenna to be as precise as a TomTom, etc. Doesn't mean you won't see it anyway!

This is incorrect. What you've described is what the original iPhone does?it can give a rough estimate of your location based on phone and WiFi signals. Assisted GPS is very different. Roughly speaking, it combines GPS and mobile signals to enhance performance. In other words, a phone with AGPS is even faster and more accurate than one using only GPS signals.

The iPhone 3G does have a GPS receiver. Current iPhones need to triangulate based on Wi-Fi and cell towers, but the new one adds GPS to the mix (the phone will use whatever it can, wherever it can). It can pinpoint your precise location.

Does anyone know if the apps sync with your computer and then can be transferred to a new phone. For example: can I buy an app with my current iphone, and then transfer those apps to the new 3g after I buy?

Thanks to all who corrected me. I am very glad to hear that the iPhone GPS is real.

What if I buy an edge iphone on Ebay. Can I get the edge iphone plan or is the plan for the 3g iphone the only one available now?
