Thanks for that Al. It helps a lot. I'll definitely shop better informed.

while Richard is looking to fix his Mac so he can get back on and find out which is better, I thought I would toss my 2 cents in.
I own... DW, TTP, DG and a folder full of other various freebie utilities.
my first choice for maintenance.. DW.
the only non system disc carried on the road with me.... DW
then again, I have many HD's and always carry the portable with a system and all three utils on it as well.
anal? perhaps.
data lost since floppies were 8" diameter?
zero :)

I saw this idea about putting DW on the e-drive of TTL Pro floated in a 2005 post.
I am glad to see that one can do it as well with the present versions.
I have installed TTL Pro 4.6.2 created the eDrive and am twiddling with the tests, no worries so far.
Probably will invest in DW and I'm glad to know that colocation is possible.
One worry I have is that both these utilities come with an inevitably older version of mac os. Do these get upgraded to the main os on transfer to the e-drive?
I run OS X 10.5.4 on New Year '08 iMac. Bearing in mind that MAC OS X 10.5.5 is probably just around the corner, could this lead to a proper mess?
As you can see, serious case of paranoia here.

For those that do not have much experience with these types of tools. Be cautious. Only use the utility that has been upraded to support your current system version. I have had clients that call me franticly to inform me of the ailments of their Mac, only to find out that they had upgraded their OS but not their utilities. I have seen an older version of Tech Tool Pro totally hose a HD to the point of no return that was ran on a unsupported OS version. Not even a fresh copy of DW could do the trick. This particular client did not have a backup and she ended up losing years of work. People panic and they pickup the first disk they can get their hands on and only make matters worse.
On a deferent occasion this one client managed to throw away (I would not think this was possible), file by file, folder by folder, her entire system, home directory and all. She then rebooted only to find her system would not start because it was in the trash, and I could not access the trash because it was in the trash. File Buddy to the rescue. I manage to view the trash and restore her system. Yes, this was tremendously stupid. She got confused and thought that the left icons on a opened window of the finder where copies of here data, so she decided to clean them out, she still has issues understanding what a short cut is. I have learned more about repairing Mac software from this one client then from anybody else, not because she teaches me, but because she forces me to learn how to fix her messes. She is a good artist, but not to good with computers.

Only use the utility that has been upgraded to suit your current OS version.
Seems like excellent advice. it should be carved in stone.
With the OS X upgrades that were flying about up to recently, one would have to leave them well enough alone for long periods.
Thank you.
Nothing like a posting that tells it as it is.
