@charlich,
Fear not... your iPhone is ok. Just click on the X to cancel the attempt to connect to the iTunes Store, then click your music library (or something) and then back to the iPhone. If it seems to hang in the same place (give it 15 or 30 seconds to try), then repeat the procedure. You may also start to get an error dialog saying the connection failed or some such... still don't worry and keep trying. It will ultimately succeed in the update. The same thing happened to me and with a little persistence, I finally got my iPhone to update and all is well.

It is now 8pm PST and it is still not available. iTunes goes back and forth, sometimes telling me my iPod 1.1.4 is up to date, at other times it says there is a 2.0 upgrade but then fails with error message 'the store is not available'. I've been trying to get it for the past 4 hours!

I'm not sure if Apple did not anticipate the amount of traffic they would receive after releasing this update, or if they simply don't care about fully testing their rollout vs. trying to reach the masses a quick as possible, however, it is very frustrating as a user who is trying to update his iPhone to receive error messages and potentially have to wait 24 hours or so before someone gets it right. I am now facing having a device that I can't even use to listen to my music, and yet I am still paying my service fees for the thing. I wonder if I can backcharge Apple for the time that I am not able to use my iPhone?
