I have tried everything and just cannot get Remote to work with my Apple TV's shared library.

My OS X firewall is set to allow all incoming connections.
The Remote app is successfully paired with the Apple TV.

The funny thing is that when I use the white Apple remote and start a movie playing on my Apple TV, the artwork and controls for that movie pop up on my iPhone. When I use the iPhone to switch to a different movie, it says there are no movies.

The Remote app works great if I connect it directly to my iMac that I'm sharing the library from, and it's using the same wireless network as the Apple TV.

I can't understand why everything works when I connect Remote app to my iMac but not my Apple TV. If it didn't work on my iMac, then I would say the problem is with my router. But here, it seems to be the Apple TV. But there aren't any settings on my Apple TV to change. I also connected it to the router via ethernet and that didn't help.

Ok, I got this solved but not sure I like the solution.

First, I rebooted the machine. After that, I was FINALLY able to get beyond the passcode verification hang. Entered the passcode into iTunes and received virtually instant recognition. However, Remote could not find the library.

The solution was to enable "Allow all incoming" in 10.5's software firewall.

I agree with everyone that this little freebie from Apple works GREAT, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable leaving my software firewall wide open. (I do have the hardware FW in my Airport Extreme, though)

Does anyone know how to open a single port in Apple's software firewall? From what I've gleaned over the last few hours, opening up port 3689 should do the trick, but I don't know how to open it.

While everyone seems to be busy tweaking their iPhone 3G to work properly, Has anyone realized that this remote ability of a device for various media players has been out there for years now? Not just itunes but various applications and with various mobile phones/devices and take note...on mac or windows platform. I've been using Salling Clicker for that task. Unfortunately, iPhone don't allow 3rd party application for that simple task coz i believe it would pre-empt their plans. Connection can be bluetooth or wifi too.

I followed these steps and worked perfectly. However I was having some battery issues with my old iphone so i thought of swaping it in the apple store this evening. I got one and restored it but the funny thing is remote application in not working again. I repeated the same procedures but it wont show up in devices list.
Can any one please throw some light on it
I really want to have this remote application activated on my phone

Using my MacBook with 10.4.11 I am getting a "Can't find Library XXXXX's Music" error after I paired my laptop with my iPod Touch. Apple's documentation is worthless (read, non-existent)on the subject. As for the Firewall settings I don't see anywhere the "Tab" that Vansmac is talking about. Is this a 10.5.x thing?

Update: I just re-read Philbert's post about opening port 3689 (under the Sharing control panel then "Firewall" tab in 10.4.11). Turning on "iTunes Music Sharing" port and my library instantly popped on. Problem solved. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I installed Remote, but my iTunes did not see my iPhone at all, so I couldn't even enter the password. I double-checked my Firewall settings, but I was already allowing iTunes to accept incoming communications, so that wasn't the problem.
I finally found this document on Apple's Support pages (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1947), which said that both the computer and the iPhone need to be on the same wireless network. It turns out my iPhone had jumped onto my neighbor's network without my noticing, and so the devices weren't talking to each other. Once I switched the iPhone to my home network, it worked perfectly. It's an amazing little application.

Glad it helped.

The ironic thing is I got the warning about opening up port 3689 on a 10.5 machine ... and Apple doesn't give a way to open individual ports in 10.5's firewall (like you can in 10.4). Instead, you're only allowed to open connections specific to "applications". Alas, allowing all connections for "iTunes" didn't help me. The only way I can get this to work is to set the firewall to allow ALL connections. Not a good thing imo. I think you can still open individual ports via the terminal in 10.5, but I have no clue about the specifics.

On a related note - I think something is broke with Apple's firewall in 10.5. Printer Sharing should work by simply checking it in the Sharing prefs but it doesn't for me. It only works with allowing "all connections" in the firewall. Sigh.

The Remote app rocks though!

I've used and reviewed Salling Clicker in the past. It's a nifty add-on that does indeed let you use certain devices to control certain bits of software. But the truth is it doesn't hold a candle to Remote for the particular task of controlling iTunes or an Apple TV. (And in the case of Apple TV, Salling Clicker didn't work at all.)

That was actually noted in the first paragraph of the article: controlling an Apple TV?or iTunes running on a computer?located on the same local network. (Your iPhone or iPod touch must be connected to that network via WiFi.)

Remote is very nice but I actually like Salling Clicker better because you can control all of the stuff on your mac with it (DVD player, quicktime, VLC for movies, EyeTV, powerpoint & keynote presentations, iphoto and itunes of course). It has a very easy interface and brings the album and photo information onto your control screen on the handheld device (a mobile phone or a palm handheld).

Is there a reason why Apple couldn't do this with Remote ?

I read an interview with Jonas Salling where he said he was waiting to see what Apple came up with before developing Clicker for the iPhone. The road is clear, Jonas - can we see a Clicker on the iPhone soon ?

With regards to movie rentals, I did get that to work. I did a rental and hooked up my Dell laptop to my home theatre system. I started the movie in iTunes on the laptop. Then Remote allowed me to pause, restart, rewind, fast forward, from the iPhone. What didn't seem to work was starting the movie from Remote - the movie did not appear in the list on the iPhone. So starting the movie from the laptop seems to be key.

This was very cool. I could sit back in my easy chair and enjoy my movie, and not have to get up and go to the laptop if I wanted to rewind a little bit and see a scene again.

" can't wait until friends are over and I start controlling the TV via phone from another room."
don't think you're gonna be able to do that, at least if you mean 'TV' literally.

same for me. using remote on my phone i can see "My Movies"--movies i OWN on appleTV, but rentals don't show up. And yeah, once i start a rental with the white apple remote, i can then start/pause it using remote on the phone. but i don't think using TWO remotes to operate an appleTV is going to impress our friends!

I have the same problem. I have a G4 17" Powerbook running OS 10.5. I upgraded to the newest version, deleted "Remote" and reinstalled, tried rebooting the computerx3 all to no avail. I deleted the "library" on the "remote" program and even renamed it on my Mac. Nope. The "remote" shows up fine in iTunes 7.7 and it detects the library. But then it won't recognize it. Any other ideas? In particular any that work?
