Review: Remote for iPhone and iPod touch

My OS X firewall is set to allow all incoming connections.
The Remote app is successfully paired with the Apple TV.
The funny thing is that when I use the white Apple remote and start a movie playing on my Apple TV, the artwork and controls for that movie pop up on my iPhone. When I use the iPhone to switch to a different movie, it says there are no movies.
The Remote app works great if I connect it directly to my iMac that I'm sharing the library from, and it's using the same wireless network as the Apple TV.
I can't understand why everything works when I connect Remote app to my iMac but not my Apple TV. If it didn't work on my iMac, then I would say the problem is with my router. But here, it seems to be the Apple TV. But there aren't any settings on my Apple TV to change. I also connected it to the router via ethernet and that didn't help.

First, I rebooted the machine. After that, I was FINALLY able to get beyond the passcode verification hang. Entered the passcode into iTunes and received virtually instant recognition. However, Remote could not find the library.
The solution was to enable "Allow all incoming" in 10.5's software firewall.
I agree with everyone that this little freebie from Apple works GREAT, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable leaving my software firewall wide open. (I do have the hardware FW in my Airport Extreme, though)
Does anyone know how to open a single port in Apple's software firewall? From what I've gleaned over the last few hours, opening up port 3689 should do the trick, but I don't know how to open it.

Update: I just re-read Philbert's post about opening port 3689 (under the Sharing control panel then "Firewall" tab in 10.4.11). Turning on "iTunes Music Sharing" port and my library instantly popped on. Problem solved. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I finally found this document on Apple's Support pages (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1947), which said that both the computer and the iPhone need to be on the same wireless network. It turns out my iPhone had jumped onto my neighbor's network without my noticing, and so the devices weren't talking to each other. Once I switched the iPhone to my home network, it worked perfectly. It's an amazing little application.

Glad it helped.
The ironic thing is I got the warning about opening up port 3689 on a 10.5 machine ... and Apple doesn't give a way to open individual ports in 10.5's firewall (like you can in 10.4). Instead, you're only allowed to open connections specific to "applications". Alas, allowing all connections for "iTunes" didn't help me. The only way I can get this to work is to set the firewall to allow ALL connections. Not a good thing imo. I think you can still open individual ports via the terminal in 10.5, but I have no clue about the specifics.
On a related note - I think something is broke with Apple's firewall in 10.5. Printer Sharing should work by simply checking it in the Sharing prefs but it doesn't for me. It only works with allowing "all connections" in the firewall. Sigh.
The Remote app rocks though!

I've used and reviewed Salling Clicker in the past. It's a nifty add-on that does indeed let you use certain devices to control certain bits of software. But the truth is it doesn't hold a candle to Remote for the particular task of controlling iTunes or an Apple TV. (And in the case of Apple TV, Salling Clicker didn't work at all.)

That was actually noted in the first paragraph of the article: controlling an Apple TV?or iTunes running on a computer?located on the same local network. (Your iPhone or iPod touch must be connected to that network via WiFi.)

Is there a reason why Apple couldn't do this with Remote ?
I read an interview with Jonas Salling where he said he was waiting to see what Apple came up with before developing Clicker for the iPhone. The road is clear, Jonas - can we see a Clicker on the iPhone soon ?

This was very cool. I could sit back in my easy chair and enjoy my movie, and not have to get up and go to the laptop if I wanted to rewind a little bit and see a scene again.

don't think you're gonna be able to do that, at least if you mean 'TV' literally.

same for me. using remote on my phone i can see "My Movies"--movies i OWN on appleTV, but rentals don't show up. And yeah, once i start a rental with the white apple remote, i can then start/pause it using remote on the phone. but i don't think using TWO remotes to operate an appleTV is going to impress our friends!
