Hi,
I just got a new MacBook (2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and
immediately ran Software update before I started installing other
stuff. I noticed pretty quickly after installing updates that X11
wouldn't open. So I did an erase&install back to 10.5 (virgin) and
then X11 worked. Just to make sure it wasn't some random chance I
updated to 10.5.4 again and X11 won't open. I tried reinstalling it
from the Leopard disk and nothing changed. I thought I read somewhere
that 10.5.4 was supposed to fix a problem where X11 would only
partially install... but I can't find whatever it was that I read so
maybe I'm just imagining things? Anyway, I looked in Console and this is what pops up when I attempt to open X11:
"command=/usr/X11/bin/xterm
([0x0-0x11011].org.x.x11_launcher[107]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PGID 108 PPID 1 login
X11.app = /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
Unrecognized option: -launchd"
Then it gives what looks like a "man" entry ... "use: X
[:<display>] [option]" and a list of a bunch of flags and what
they do. It also repeats the messages about every 15 seconds. I went
to the file locations listed in the console and found that
/usr/X11/bin/xterm doesn't exist, but
usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 does exist. So I'm guessing the
problem is that some files are missing but I don't know how to get them
since reinstalling X11 didn't do anything. The only solution I've
thought of so far is going back to virgin 10.5 and not installing the
10.5.4 update... but I don't think that should be necessary because my
MBP is fully up to date and its X11 works just fine.
I'm open to any suggestions you may have. Thanks,
- Sean

10.5.4 breaks X11?

I can confirm this. If you the following
1) Install a fresh copy of Leopard (10.5)
- x11 works
2) Immediately update to 10.5.4 (combo installer)
- x11 breaks
The fix for me was to install this -
http://xquartz.macos...c/wiki/X112.2.3
This appears to be a later version of what Apple is shipping.
