I love the feel of this article. I myself expressed displeasure in having to pay $30 for all of these updates but that's the price you pay for having the latest and greatest. Awesome article.

Calendars are also tagged with their respective colors and now there is a menu to view specific calendars created in iCal.
One not-so-good thing about the first (1.1.4) Touch update was that it was very difficult to reinstall the apps after your touch was reset. If Apple tags the update to your AppleID/iTunes account, just as song purchases, this would make some of the complaints go away. People expect to retain ownership of what they purchase, regardless of the price.

Any guesses as to the timetable for a new iPod Touch with GPS? I need to buy a new Macbook and want to take advantage of the educational iPod offer, but was wondering whether to hold out to the last minutes in hopes of a discounted Touch or just get a free Nano and buy the Touch when it finally appears.

I use my Palm TX with a Bluetooth GPS and TomTom, so I suppose I could use the Touch with a Bluetooth GPS as well, but having it built in would be very nice!

Not that I have any insider knowledge on the subject, but Apple typically announces new iPod models in late September/early October in anticipation of the holiday season.

Which iPod Touch do you have that can use cell-towers to get it's location? Mine only uses Wi-Fi.

A couple things... I can guarantee you that the educational offer will expire BEFORE you see a new iPod Touch, in fact you can probably look at when the promotion expires to get a good idea as to when the new iPods will be released. Apple likes to use the Back-to-school season to sell out of the old generation of iPods, before releasing new models for the holiday season. Also, the Touch does NOT have Bluetooth, so a Bluetooth GPS won't help you at all with the current models (what the next generation will have is just about anyone's guess, but I doubt that GPS is a high priority, bluetooth might make a bit more sense though).

Without a doubt, yes, the update is worth $10. Having used a jailbroken iPod for several months, it's nice to see some polished apps built with the official SDK. Some of the games in particular have far exceeded what I originally thought these things could do.
But I think I would have paid the $10 just to get Apple's new Remote app, which is by far the coolest new app in the store.

Seems to me like a clever move on Apple's part. Give 'em a freebie, get 'em to try the App store. And make sure the freebie is one that will garner universal approval. A really good experience with the App store means most of those people will come back and spend some pennies later.

In case it was not mentioned before, it looks like you can easily "re-download" free and paid apps again. I just logged into my iTunes account from another machine and tried it, and it works.. :)

I didn't know you could update more than one Touch. Thanks for that info, I was sitting here debating whether or not I wanted to pay to update the others.
Does iTunes automatically begin the update or do you need to use the manual installation method by navigating to the folder where it's stored?
