It is unfortunate that that incarnate non issue has been latched on to by the tech reporting community and Apple (not AT&T doing the actual service providing and billing) will be forever remembered for.
AT&T has always charged a premium charge for 3G service. Sense Apple did not make a 3G phone there was no reason to be charged this surcharge. When Apple started manufacturing a 3G phone AT&T brought the pricing plan in line with its other 3G phones, and pricing plans.
I sometimes wonder if people really excepted to get 3G service for essentially free. Do they really think the telco's are going to spend millions in upgrading their service out of the goodness of their hearts.

They might say, "Twice as fast, crashes 4 times as much."
the iPhone 3G 2.0 software crashes constantly... 4-5 times per day. Unusable almost... not sure if its the phone or the software, but text message chimes quit working all the time... constant itunes problems crashing and the phone resetting.
I am VERY disappointed in it.

nmpike,
I understand your frustrations but please do not imply that every iPhone 3g 2.0 software crashes for everyone because that is not true.
I cannot remember any time new "works" came out without a "hitch" for some.
I sincerely hope you get your system working, it is a great product full of innovation.

"Do they really think the telco's are going to spend millions in upgrading their service out of the goodness of their hearts."
No I would think they would upgrade as a added value that would return their investment by adding new subscribers. Not by gouging their present customers. Lots of people wouldn't switch to ATT from Verizon etc. etc because thay had faster networks. That should be their ONLY reason to upgrade their network, to stay competitive. No reason why I should have to sign a new contract just to upgrade to a newer model.
From ATT upgrade site "You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option, with the exception of iPhone which requires a 2-year commitment." So they reward their current customers by making them sign a a new 2yr higher priced contract. Thanks ATT, does that come with some lube too.
No thanks, I'll keep my current plan and 1st gen iPhone, with SW upgrade its like a new phone anyway. I would bite if they have just raised monthly say $5 more, but $15 more a month to get same features feels like I'm getting rear ended. And their are a lot people out there that feel same way, they would gain way more upgraders and new subscribers this way. iPhone is steamroller all on its own, couple that with a reasonable plan and they would probably gain millions more subscribers than they are gonna get the way their goiing about it.

AT&T's service doesn't seem to always be all that fast, even for those lucky enough to live in the few areas where it is available.
Sure, you should expect to pay more for enhanced service, but only the people who get enhanced service should be paying more. The majority of the country isn't getting anything more, outside of the iPhone 3G.
You can tout and you can shout but you'd better be right. AT&T isn't and apparently iPhone 3G needs some work.
