Why can't I buy a ringtone?

I just bought my iPhone this morning. I am pretty happy - I have never had an iPod or a cell phone (my crappy work phone hardly counts)

My first snag is in trying to buy a ringtone. I select the portion of the song I want, preview it, and then when I hit the buy button, nothing happens! Once or twice it has asked for my password but then it doesn't download. Only once have I noticed any downloading activity, but it just disappeared. When I click on Ringtones, nothing is there. I have tried this several times and on several songs, and these are all songs I purchased from iTunes and are in my library.

I do have ringtones selected under my Preferences.

Any suggestions?
