New life for old Macs

A font server/manager is used so as to make 700 fonts available, without actually having them all "loaded" at once. I can't imagine having 700 fonts actually activated at any one time, however I can tell you that the company I work for has well over 10,000 fonts installed via the font server (which is located in an office about 500 miles from the one I work in) and I notice no speed difference using the fonts on the server from the ones installed on my machine.

Hi
As a student I'm forced to milk my old '05 G4 ibook for all its worth, and it has begun to show some wear. One issue in perticular that is bothering me is the fact that the volume does not work at all. All the settings seem to be set up fine, and the mute button hasn't been pressed. I was told to hold PROpt+CMD before turning on my computer, but it hasn't work. Does anyone have any advice for me, besides getting a new computer?
Thanks...

If you're running Logic Pro, you can use Logic Node to offload some processing to other Macs on the local network. This can help you run more plug-ins simultaneously.

I keep my G4 Powerbook for the kids when they come over or company. My MBP and twenty-four inch screen is hands off. I have too many important documents etc. so the old Powerbook is just for that.

Well if you seriously don't need it, you can always gut it and turn it into something creative. A friend of mine turned his old G3 iMac into a fish tank and I saw someone turn their G4 Cube into a robot. I even saw a lady who turned her G4 iMac into a cake stand (well...it was a cartoon)

I still use a G5 Quad for a lot of work and play. It is still a great workhorse. But even older PPC Macs can be used for things like iTunes music machines or home music servers. I still keep a lot of my older G4's, but I sold all of my G3 and earlier Macs as they were taking up space and my Wife and Kids wouldn't bother with them. No matter what though, I still love me some PPC whether its OS 9.2 or OSX.

So nobody has anything older than a G4 mac? Where are the G3 macs? I have an old performa in my basement with a 50MB HD, running system 8. Does anyone else remember macs before OS X? If so what were your favorite machine, and how did you have your system configured?
