Shawend, i think its interesting that my serial number is #G84444B and yours is #G8444CD what does the G mean? Is it the location where it was put together? Does anyone know what these letters and numbers stand for?

Just curious.

I think it is the location of assembly. Mine is CK532xxx - it was assembled in Cork, Ireland.

Here is a great resource for decoding Apple Serial numbers:

http://www.chipmunk....applemodel.html

In this case the G8 indicates that the unit was made in California. So much for the cheap Chinese manufacturing theory. I still think this is a design flaw.

Wow that is a super cool site. I tested it using the serial number for this intel mac and i knew it did come from china because it was ordered after macworld in 06 and was on backorder. It did come directly from shanghi and after i put in the serial that is exactly what it said. Very cool!

thanks so much

Ok.. it's been a month since I was able to bring my computer back from the dead. I was able to boot up from the installation cd and installed panther on a brand new hard drive. I then upgraded to Tiger and then, week by week, I installed CS2 and Office 2004.

It still locks up from time to time (mostly in itunes or when the screen saver comes on.... still trying to figue that one out). However, it's not nearly as bad as it use to be. Still.. .I know in my gut this fix is only temporary. If I can figure a way to work with this machine for the next 4 years, I'll be satisfied. But if it dies before then, I'm going to continue to work on my PC laptop. I refuse to give Apple any money until 2012 (even if my iTouch dies or if they come out with an iPhone for my cell phone service provider.) Here me now Apple: you have been cut off.

For what it's worth, my serial number is g84405.... and it was made Oct 2004 in USA. I purchased it through bestbuy.com in April 2005.

FYI,

Apparently someone over at Apple is tracking the comments about G5s over there - because the moment I dropped the email for the guy over @ NYTimes...they sent me an email about why it was deleted and violating the terms of use on their forums.

Nice to know they at least paid attention to that - and not the months of post from concerned users. If you doubted it before. they're CLEARLY in damage control mode on this issue.

My serial number is YM5151xxxxx.. China made. The repair shop gave no indication why one of the two processors would fail. "Luck of the draw" was the quote. They ran it on a processor they pulled from a machine in their shop and no problems. The new processor is due in tomorrow. I should get it back then and will give it a good test (90 day warranty on repairs). I'll re-post with results.

Didn't get that response from NYT.

Steve already knows about the problem. Our goal is for Apple to take action. Action for public corporations is always in response to potential negative impact on stock price which leads to angry powerful shareholders.

Affect stock price and mgmt is forced to address shareholders concerns ergo creating a solution for the now very public problem.

hi everyone,

I have g5 quad with serial starts with G8604XXXXXX. Month ago, my problems starts suddenly. I thought Its from hard drive failure, and I went to buy new one. I installed with leopard (cause i lost my tiger dvd). Anyway, I had to deal with the computer and leopard. I could not install leopard cause it was freezing when installing. I bought external dvd burner which i thought i had a dvd problem. I installed leopard after i tried 30 times. But it was still booting problem. I put my old hard drive in to external case and boot while i was pressing D. It worked. But a little time. It kept freezing. I took it to the apple store. Tell them, i have rights to change my power supply. They change it free. Now i can use my computer, but still have to press D to boot. I did realize one of my cpu overheated. Still working but i dont know until when.. I am so regret to buy apple and paid them 5000$ for this computer. I am not thinking the buy anything from them anymore. (Even my ipod failed after a year later) Hopefully they reading what people writing here and find a solution.

Well, after the processor replacement it ran for 2 days and then locked up. First gray screen, then black screen- no start up chime. Took it back into service and am waiting for diagnosis.....

Sorry to hear it's failing again gbenner, I think this is the reason for the 90 day repairs warranty - they are following a list of possible failed parts not actually diagnosing the actual one.
It'll be interesting to see how far they go replacing parts, my guess is the logic board will be replaced next, then another processor if it dies again. Are you paying for this? or is it still covered by Applecare?

Just incase it's been missed in this 16 page thread, there is another thread on this topic on the Apple discussions
