Hi,
I'm having a weird permissions issue with Mail.app. Started over a week ago. I've posted to Aplle's community pages but had no luck there.

I'm running 10.5.4 with the latest updates, but when I try to launch Mail I get a dialog box telling me:

"Mail can't open because you don't have the necessary permissions to change the folder where it saves information.... If this folder is on your computer, use the Get Info panel in the Finder to change your permissions for this folder to ?Read & Write.? If this folder is located on a network server, contact the server administrator. After your permissions are changed, open Mail again."

I tried the solution suggested by the dialog box, as well the the method in this post
(http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6964972) which involved using a permissions utility on the Mac OS X Install disc. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Back with an update...
I never really solved the permission problem, but ended up using Time Machine to back up to an earlier version of the entire mail folder in the Library (~/Library/Mail). I guess that's what Time Machine is for ...
Lately though, there are inklings of a less drastic solution (see http://www.macfixit....080903091937381 ) that involves just reverting the preferences file. Maybe that'll help.
I'll have to remember that the next time it happens to see if it works. But ... hopefully it won't be necessary: so far everything has been working as if nothing ever happened.
Good luck to anyone with the same problem.
Cheers,
G
