Keyboard copy mode: how does one get in, and how does one get out?

Normally, I highlight an item for copying or cutting by holding down the clicker below the track pad, then highlighting with finger motion over the trackpad. Occasionally, I futz up, and I have the trackpad (or shall I say, cursor) in a state in which, no matter where I move it, it highlights wherever it's going (other finger no longer on trackpad).

Where am I going, and where have I been?

You either have the clicker down, or have trackpad clicking enabled.

I'll have to say, I don't have the clicker down...but I'll check to see whether I have keyboard clicking enabled. And perhaps this is related to the other question you answered, dirty keyboard. Thanks.

Sorry, I made a big mistake, I was thinking of the other question and wrote keyboard clicking, not TRACKPAD clicking.

I know, but I'm just trying to make sure that your problem gets solved.
