I am currently scanning old film. I need a program that will rename pictures and number them. Is there such a thing? Thanks!

Just about every half-decent image manager will do it. Adobe Bridge, Microsoft Expression Media, Adobe Lightroom...

If you don't need to preview the pictures, there's NameMangler, which is powerful , free, and usable on any type of files.

I do not want to load a few hundred pictures to rename them into a photo app. I need a program that will rename and number files. That it is pictures is irrelevant.

Sorry I had not seen the bottom of your reply. Thank you so much. I will have to figure how to use Rename. It is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

I second this. I've tested most of them, and my favorite is NameMangler. Here's our short writeup:

I have a big problem with it because it doesn?t have a manual to speak off. I screwed up a full folder of names. I should have tried on something unimportant. I ended up an addition to the name instead of changing the name. I have no idea how to fix this. It looks like it is going to do the job when I learn the in?s and out?s of the program.

I actually might have gotten the idea from Macworld. I used to use Renamer4Mac, but it changed from free to shareware, and was happy to find out about NameMangler.

I was full of hope about this program. Of course I have a back up so the damage this program cause is no big deal. Up to now I used Preview to look at pictures and delete the double and those not up to par. Right in Preview I used to drag pictures to the trash. Emptying the trash deleted the pictures from the folder. Now in Tiger Preview from some reason lost this wonder. Then I use Lightroom to edit and store. One of the many things lost from the great OS called Tiger.

This is why I needed a program to renumber a collection of pictures. Maybe it is possible to do it but I have no idea how. Thanks for trying to help me.

The manual is available via the Help menu. When in NameMangler, choose Help: Name Mangler Help.

Before you actually click on the Perform Task button to process files, be sure to look at the preview column on the right-hand side of the file listing. It shows you a live preview of what each file will be named.

You should be able to remove the text you accidentally added to each file's name using Name Manger. You could find and replace, or you could use the Remove/Insert Characters task.
