My lovely MacBook Pro was stolen this past saturday, leaving me needign a new computer. My insurance will cover the cost of a replacement, however with all the talk recently about Apple releasing new notebooks soon, I am torn between getting a new system right away or trying to limp by on my old PC tower until Apple releases new hardware. What do you think I should do? Wait for something new, or buy now?

Buy new MacBook Pro now, or wait?

The catch with using the PC is that I have many Mac programs that I rely on (CS3 for one), and all my files are backed up using Time Machine, which I can't (as far as I know) read on my PC. I can live with out these for a bit, but not until next year. I know it is impossible to know if or when Apple will release new products, but if you had to speculate, how long do you think I would have to wait for a new laptop refresh?

Ah, the old PC/Mac platform problem. I bought a PPC Mac to try them. Nice but I didn't like having to buy all new software. Now that Mac is running Intel bootcamped, I run XP to host my Adobe Master Collection CS3 and other PC software. Buying Mac based software is just not wise for me.
No speculation for me. Intel has a new chip scheduled for the fourth quarter. Apple has a big product meeting in January. That would be one date marker. There doesn't seem to be any radically new hardware developments making news so Apple will probably only offer incremental changes this year or next unless you count cosmetic changes as an Ooohh and Aaahh marker.
CS3 on a PC can't now nor likely later be able to take advantage of 64-bit nor 4GB RAM on a notebook. I guess the same is true for a Mac CS3. The cheapest route would be to turn in the Mac CS3 for a PC copy and buy a refurbished MBP to run XP bootcamped. Now you know Time Machine is not a good cross platform backup option. The more expensive option is to keep your Mac CS3, buy two Mac notebooks and get rid of the PC tower. That way you can access Time Machine data and be locked into Mac forever.

Rule #1.... There is ALWAYS something new coming down the pipeline.
so......
a) if you NEED it, go buy one.
b) if you WANT it, go buy one.
or
c) you can spend a lifetime waiting on the "new model" that is just around the corner, then waiting for the one that is coming out behind that one.
bottom line. ... you cannot catch latest and greatest technology.

This is the best advice. I agree completely.
That said, it is largely believed that Apple will introduce new products at an event mid-September. No guarantees that the MBPro will be updated, of course, but if you can wait a few more weeks, you might consider it.
