Can anyone tell me what the maximum size, speed and other specs are for RAM for my dual 2.0GHz PowerPC G5? I need an upgrade really bad and I'm not sure what to get for it, but I know I want to bump it up to 4GB.

Right now I have a total of 1GB of RAM (4x 256MB DDR SDRAM, 2 are PC3200U-30330, 2 are PC2700U-25330), but it just isn't cutting it. Also, I don't know whether or not if I get 4x1GB or 2x2GB (whichever will work/work best) if I will need to remove the 4x256MB I have in there now. I tried finding this info online but couldn't seem to find any clear details on it.

I am a student, so finding a good deal on compatible RAM is key. I would prefer to use non-apple RAM since I know it will be cheaper, but trying to figure out if I will be getting something that will actually work is driving me nuts.

Please help with any info you can. THANKS!

Mike

Hi
While I'm surprised the PC2700 are working, as long as they are in pairs is the only real requirement. You may consider, if feasible, to remove the PC2700 units and replace them with whatever you upgrade to, for a bit of a speed improvement. As far as max capacity, Mactracker and Apple-History.com seem to have arguing numbers on that subject.

Hmm. Well now I just need to figure out if my G5 is an early 2005 or late 2005. But both links you gave seem to show that the late 2005 can handle up to 16GB of RAM, despite other sources stating that the G5 can only take up to 8GB. And the speed of the RAM it's compatible with seems to vary as well.
So do you know of any way to determine which mine is - early or late 2005 G5? I don't think I will upgrade to 16GB at any point, but if it can handle faster than PC3200 DIMMs, I'd sure like to know. Aside from some faster DIMMs being a bit cheaper than PC3200, it would be nice to get the fastest RAM I can in this thing.
Thanks again,

Mike

Hi
From Mactracker, the Machine ID for the Early 2005 is PowerMac7,2 for the dual 2GHz and PowerMac11,2 for all Late 2005. However, the easiest way is that your machine uses DDR-SDRAM like all other earlier G5s. The Late 2005 was the only Power Mac G5 to use DDR2-SDRAM, PCI Express instead of PCI-X, and dual-core processors.

No, your machine can't support faster memory than PC3200 ( DDR-400 ), since faster is DDR2 ( PC2-4200 a.k.a. DDR2-533 ). DDR2 is not compatible with DDR. Different amount of pins and different voltages, therefore, the standard is is the alignment slot is different enough that one can't install DDR in DDR2 slots or DDR2 in DDR slots. Same goes for DDR3. They aren't cross compatible.
