Looking for a fix for Apple's iPhone fix

I must agree to this article. My brother was telling me about all the horror stories people are having with their 3G, but I was one of the exceptions. Now, all of a sudden, my 3G is acting up. It's not as bad as ones that I have heard, but my signal is next to none in most solid areas.

The iPod Touch isn't faring much better. After 2.0.2 I could no longer run any 3rd party apps. They'd begin to startup, but then quit back to the home screen. Power off and on didn't help. Restoring and setting up from a backup didn't help. The only thing that helped was to restore and setup as a new iPod. Which of course means that I lost all my app data. Actually there are other problems I've had with the previous 2.0.x versions as well.
The 2.0.x firmware has brought some really cool and fun features, but it is beta or maybe even alpha quality software that shouldn't have been released. I have to presume that it got released when it did because they wanted to stay ahead of the competition, specifically with the iPhone 3G. They should have delayed the release until it was all working properly. Let's hope they get this fixed for iPhones and iPod Touches very soon, and that it doesn't hurt Apple in the long run.

I've been leaving 3G off until the issues are resolved. Besides, 3G doesn't do me much good most of the time: I work in a small town outside of suburban Dallas that doesn't have 3G coverage and my house in the 'burbs is in a dead zone within a 3G coverage area. The only time I can really use 3G is when I'm eating out or shopping.

Don't ya just hate it when that happens? 2.0 nixed my ability to connect to any wifi network. 2.0.1 caused my iPhone (the original) to drop Edge repeatedly, drop calls, or sent callers to voicemail. 2.0.2 fixed what 2.0.1 broke (except the wifi issue). In fact, I might even go so far as to say there is some improvement compared to the service I was receiving with AT&T using 1.0.
What has really been frustrating are posts from individuals who AREN'T have problems, who accuse those who are of just plain doing something wrong. But I'm sure another update is forthcoming and they'll get bit eventually, just as the author has. But I'm sure he just doing something wrong. ;)

It saddens me to hear all these problems with the new iPhone OS and the 3G hardware. I updated the OS to 2.0.2 two days ago and everything on my 1st gen 16GB iPhone is doing just fine. No dropped calls, all my apps are working as they should. My WiFi connection is full strength--and since 2.0.2 the iPhone feels snappier and faster, although this may just be me.
The more the OS gets "fixed" it is starting to look like a possible hardware problem, since it appears to be mostly a 3G phone calamity. I haven't seen many non 3G iPhone problems reported, so Apple may have (although I hope not) a huge recall process in its future for the 3G.
I thought I should check in and see if I can get some feedback from other 1st gen users who have moved up to 2.0.2.

My phone crashes all the time, which is Apple's fault, but with the 3G call drops, I think that is more ATT....
I have a 3G phone that is not an iPhone, and it drops calls as well... I think ATT has too many customers and their cell towers cannot handle it...
I never thought I would say it, but I am sorry I got the new iPhone. shoulda kept my old one.

iPhone 3G is great as long as:
1. you are always close to a power supply (poor battery life)
2. never want to copy a photo, song, contact, ringtone or application from other than ONE Mac or PC
3. never want to copy anything from the iphone to anything else (unless you email it)
3. don't want to customize how your text messages are saved
4. don't want to customize alarm volume compared to ringer volume (it's all the same)
5. never need to forward a text message!
6. never need to copy and paste anything.
7. want to ALWAYS be discoverable by bluetooth devices
8. want to search endlessly for other bluetooth devices
9. never want to add any words to the predictive text dictionary
10. don't mind dropped calls!
other than those things, it's really great

It's a bit odd to interrupt a stream of bad news with a positive note, but I've had zero problems with my 3G -- no dropped calls, no hanging, nothing -- whether on 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.0.2. In fact, I'm writing this comment on it from the press room at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
Am I merely lucky? I couldn't say -- but it's certainly not because I'm "livi g right.". Perhaps it's because I just bought mine a week ago? Again, I don't know -- more data is needed.

lwdesign:
I haven't had the common issues either on my 1st gen 16gig. I had the basic application crashes and slow response in Contacts but none of the 3G problems. The new update seems to have fixed any lag in Contacts and none of my apps have crashed yet. I did however have an issue with my Bluetooth. When I went to re-pair the phone and headset it just got stuck opening the Bluetooth setting. The little progress circle just kept spinning. Tried everything and eventually had to restore the phone. A little advice, when you update your software and it says your phone is backing up, that's either not a complete backup or it does not transfer to iTunes. When I restored my phone, I figured it had just backed up during the upgrade so I wouldn't have to wait another 30 - 60 min. (which I never had to do before 2.0) for another. When all my apps were finished transferring I lost every saved note, game status, setting, and worst of all, over two months of account info in PocketMoney. I'm too discouraged to re-enter all that info just yet. I might try restoring it to an earlier time. Just gotta Google it and figure out how. It's funny, with all the annoying issues and esp. with the asinine way it does not do some basic --cr@p-- (see maxonly's post above), I still absolutely love it and don't regret ever forking over 500 bucks for it. Anyway, I hope these issues don't discourage too many from getting one. Just think of it as a cheaper version of the 1st gen with gps (By the way, AT&T should credit all 3G users for the extra $15 a month they are spending for a wavelength that does not work yet).
P.S. Just got some Shure SE530 headphones. Those coupled with running mp3gain software on my music files has me in absolute audio heaven! Contrary to some, there is absolutely no hiss from the SE530 running on either my iPhone or 80g iPod Classic. Worth every penny.
