OK so I have Mac OSX 10.5.4 and I have downloaded MS Office 12.1.1 update. I can follow the installation until it comes to choosing a drive. My main Mac HD drive is identified but when I "choose" this drive I get an big red '!' and a comment;

"You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."

I have MS Office for Mac 2004 student edition. I have over 30G available on this HD. I am up to date with all the software downloads, I have my Mac set for auto check on a regular basis. As this is the only drive I have on my MacBook I am stuck and I don't understand why I cannot continue with this drive.

So I downloaded Office 2004 1150UpdateEN.dmg and Office 2004 1150Update.EN.dmgdownload One is about 40M the other is about 29M I don't know why the difference. I have managed to install both of these but I still CANNOT open xml or to be precise .xlsx or .pptx and I assume .docx files

Can someone please help me understand why and what I have to do, so that I can communicate with everyone around me on 2008 MS PC. I really do not want to go back to a PC.
Any help would be appreciated. I have not uninstalled either of the 1150 files. I still have the Office 12.1.1 in my download file

Thx for any help from anyone.

Phil.

Office 2008 is a significantly changed version of office, and requires you to buy it. It cannot be downloaded as an update to Office 2004.

Microsoft offers a converter for Office XML documents that you can download at http://download.micr...11UpdateEN.dmg.
You can also open Office XML documents in TextEdit and Pages. The free OpenOffice will also open these files.
