iTunes does not launch!

We have strange behaviour of iTunes. Since version 7 (when we got
our iPhone 3Gs) it installs correctly, but when the program is run, the
process starts (and grabs memory) but no window ever opens! We are
running XP Pro on a pretty normal PC. On our other PCs (with the same
configuration) everything is just hunkydory.

Has anyone seen the
same behaviour? We have tried everything short of reinstalling Windows,
including deinstalling/reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime and all Apple
software, deinstalling most other programs including codecs, thorough
scanning with anti-spam and malware programs, all to no avail. It is
pretty annoying and has cost loads of time. Apple support were friendly
and helpless!
