What about the 17" MacBook Pro? Isn't that part of the new lineup?

Sounds like they will see an update soon, but for now, are still the old ones.

The 9600M is internal -- it's just that it's a discrete graphics card, not part of the NVidia chipset as with the onboard video. All MacBook Pros (15", anyway) come with both.
The 17" received a minor freshening, but not the total makeover of the 15". We'll have a bit of info on it shortly.

The Glass Display on the new MacBook Pro is a DEAL BREAKER for me. I'm a creative professional who relies on a aging PowerBook. I was ready to buy a new MacBook Pro today, but the glossy display means no sale. What is Apple thinking? Clearly they are targeting consumers while abandoning creative professionals who prefer the matte finish. Glare and reflection are a problem with glossy displays and no amount of brightness adjustment is going to correct that. Nor is turning the notebook a viable option. What an arrogant comment during the NoteBook Event question and answer session!
Creative professionals, please call Apple's Customer Relations Department NOW and file a complaint on the Glass Display for the new MacBook Pro. Give your comments to the representative. You'll get a case number. I was told that someone will read my comments. Perhaps if Apple gets an earful from creative professionals they'll reinstate the matte finish option. If not, they lose me as a customer.
What a shame. Today was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.
Apple - What are you thinking?

Anyone else notice the Apple Store is taking longer than normal to return? The new laptops are featured on the Apple home page, but no store as of yet.

I find it interesting that the SSD is a 128GB model, when the consumer-level version of the new generation of faster, longer-life SSDs from Intel are the MLC pair of 80GB and 160GB drives, both rated at up to 250MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write.
Unless Intel is making a special 128GB part for Apple (which I doubt, but have no direct info), then Apple's most likely using Toshiba's 128GB SSD, which is rated at up to 100MB/sec read, 40MB/sec write, or Samsung's 128GB SSD, which is rated at up to 90MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write.
Why the choice of a slower drive not from its processor supplier? Pricing, maybe? Maybe the NVIDIA chipset can't keep up with a 250/70 SSD? Does anybody out there have any further information?

Will current (2.4GHz 15") Macbook Pros get software updates to take advantage of the new four finger gestures?

It seems like every time a new display technology is available, Apple feels the need to go and make their own proprietary version of the connector, like they did with their Mini VGA, Mini DVI and Micro DVI.

Is this "Mini DisplayPort" an industry standard connector like the regular DisplayPort, or is it Apple's own proprietary twist on the standard, once again demonstrating Apple's obsession with making proprietary monitor connectors?

Today's announcements are just a sign that Apple has moved on from a company "for the rest of us" to one specializing in project for creative pros (those who stuck it out during the lean years) to a "brand" of cool toys for cool people. With the success of the iPod, Apple has moved more to this "brand" mentality.
We all know, most pros would not use the glossy display. Obviously, this product is not for you. We all know friends who will be blown away by how good "Transformers" looks on the their laptop or their new "green" display. This it for them.
We all know, pros tend to use Firewire for their drives and cameras. Obviously, this product is not for you. We all know a friends who need help plugging in their Casio camera or flash drive. This it for them.
Guess what? Apple is still a company for the "for the rest of us." Unfortunately, pros are not the "us" they are referring too.

Rob, do you understand the "mini" Displayport? I understand what Displayport is, but is the "mini" part a new or proprietary Apple thing? I can't find any mention of it on online.

there is no mention of a miniDP-DP adapter, either, so I am wondering if they're the same thing? in that case, I'm wondering if this product would work to hook it up to my TV..

thanks.

Personally, I love the glossy screen. I think it's gorgeous, espcially for graphics work (like photos). I agree that it's too bad they are not offering the "old" screen as at least an option, but I don't think I'd ever want to go back. I haven't had a problem with glare, but then I live in Washington state where we don't get a lot of sun!

Sorry, smumac, but I gotta disagree with you there. These days, pros have moved on to eSATA or SAS.

Great idea.

I agree completely that glossy screens are a pain. Higher brightness to compensate for glare tires my eyes, consumes precious power while on battery power (less so with LED) but more importantly washes out the brightest areas on screen and makes it harder to distinguish subtle color nuances.

Mainly because the MacBook was glossy and had very poor viewing angles, I have been getting by on a quite nice little WinTel notebook actually for my portable needs. ( Yes, I went back to a Windows portable last year ). While not ready to buy today or next month, I was actually looking forward to investing in a MacBook Pro in the near future.

I loved to hear about the technological advances (stronger chassis, glass touchpad, dual GPU) but that is where it ended. Ignoring the two-tone look; with the glossy only screens I am not at all interested in a MBP. The only option would be to buy a current / now outdated model.

I think I will drop Consumer Relations a note. Maybe if plenty of people do, it will balance out Apple's "market research" findings somewhat.

Unless you're talking about pro photographers like myself who have a $30K camera setup and shoot tethered via FW400. Sure I can get FW800-FW400 cables, so it's not a tragedy...

Apple is thinking that according to their market research, you are in such a minority that it's not profitable to support you with a completely different panel manufacturing line. Sorry if that offends your ego (well, not really; I don't have a lot of patience for whiners).
