Apple unveils new MacBook Pro

But this was a non event if you really wanted to see a new 17" Intel MacBook Pro. Just like the so called new iPod Touch, the so called new 17" Intel MacBook Pro, this is just a non update. A sign that like the never built iPod 240GB Classic that was never built, that the 17" is no longer the top end Intel MacBook Pro. It is just a price drop on the same model that has been available for the past year. I was looking for a new 17" Intel MacBook Pro, but Steve Jobs has led a second very disappointing event. The 15" has some interesting changes. Some not so good, like the MiniDVI connector, lack of a FW400 port, no 500 GB hard drive. The 2.8 GHz processor & Nvidia 9600 graphics chipset is great for the 15" model, but where is it on the 17" model???
this seems to be the second indication in as many product introductions that smaller wins out & larger will be eliminated. Steve Jobs is doing everything to chase me away from my no IBM Clone/Windows PC for over 24 years now. I went straight from my Heath-Kit to a Mac in 1984. The wanted & needed models are being cut or never built.
Maybe it is time for some of the long term Mac faithful to come & revolt against Steve Jobs & his continuing cut of anything that isn't extra small & extra trim. I've cut out any plans for a new Intel MacBook Pro purchase. It'll be another year before we find out when the 17" is cut from from Apple's dwindling number of models. A Windows machine running Windows is not an option, but a Windows machine running the Mac OS has just filled in at least as much space as has been cut from the Mac group of models.
With this form over function multi-push by Steve Jobs & Apple will there be an Intel Mac Pro left. For those that want a mid or small sized tower maybe they will get their model at the cost of the larger & more useful feature rich full sized Intel Mac Pro has down for the past 26 months. It would appear that the Intel MacMini would be a model that would have a 3+ GHz model & some top end features & benefits, but in reality it is the forgotten languishing model. It appears that all that will be left is the small 13" & 15" Intel MacBooks & Intel MacBook Pro & the Intel iMac. Steve Jobs apparent hatred of allowing the Mac User to open the Mac & make any normal user changes is continuing to come to the surface.
I'm glad I was busy & did not listen to this 2nd in a row Apple NON-EVENT!!!

I'm sure it will look and feel better than it appears on screen... where the styling looks disappointingly derivative and unimaginative (more Compaq and Sony than Mac). The shiny black and satin silver just feels so retro and last century. Whatever happened to the creatively-inspired Mac designs at the turn of the millennium? - raindrop inspired perspex, glossy whites (who else could have made white plastic sexy?) and organic shapes that made you want them at any price! Perhaps Apple's customer's are now older, more grown-up, more mainstream and serious, perhaps the products reflect this. How sad to see Apple of all brands diluting to meet the demands of wider audiences...

I'm comfortable with and supportive of, Apple not marketing low-end products and having to pay more for products that perform well. What I don't like is for Apple to remove what few choices I do have and assume that they know what's best for me. To insist that all I have to do is reposition the screen is further insult. I want my $2k laptop facing the way I want it and the whole purpose of a laptop is to take it wherever I want to. I will never succumb to glossy screens. I will use my current MacBook Pro as long as possible and then look for used ones as long as possible. When I can no longer have an Apple laptop with Matte display, that will be the end of the [Apple] road for me.

Let alone the fact that if you must work in public places, as libraries, you're not free to adjust light or position your laptop as it would necessary to avoid reflections.
BTW, I looked at the MB[P] pictures at the Apple's site and all of them show a terrible reflection in the upper-right corner of the display. Since I doubt the photos were casually taken by SJ in transit with an iPhone, I'd guess the reflection is intentional, to show off the glossiness! Aaaarrghhhhh!!!

Just a late reply here: Keep in mind that when the MacBook Pro was announced, a 17-inch model was initially missing. It made its debut separately several months later. I suspect the same scenario will play out here: we'll see an updated 17-inch model in the not-too-distant future.
