While Quicktime Pro 7.5.5 displays In and Out selection markers upon Edit:Select_All for .wmv and .avi movies, as well as for .movs created from them, it will not do the same for .mpgs. Can anyone tell me why? (OSX 10.4.11)

Many (most? all?) MPEGs have combined (multiplexed, MUX'd) audio and
video streams. The other flavors you mentioned have separate audio and
video streams. You can see by looking at the Window/Movie-Properties
pane in QuickTime.
QT doesn't do MUX'd.
Or does it only partially. You can rotate an MPEG, but doing so loses
the audio.
Hope this helps.

Techspansion has discontinued my favorites -- iSquint (free) and its big brother VisualHub ($26),
but I just saw iSquint available for download at CNET's download.com. Just google "isquint."
It's great. Easy to use. Its output is an MP4 that is QuickTime editable. As a bonus, it also
outputs the file in iPod-friendly format.
Grab it while you can.
