I remember seeing on a video posted on Boxee blog that the USB flash drive needs to be erased into Mac OSX Extended format before ATV USB-Creator is used. That is how I did my Boxee installation, but I did not try with the default FAT32 format, so I am not sure whether FAT32 would not have worked.

No exaggeration...Boxee is awesome! It brings AppleTV to a completely different level of media player. There is some awkwardness in installation and the having to switch back and forth between AppleTV and Boxee, but it's well worth it.
If it had Netflix access it'd be perfect.

yep, Netflix seems to be the final missing piece to make it complete, but given Apple's media store position, I don't see it happening legally.

Ditto what tatilserver said. I had no problems with my install.
Also, keep in mind that once you set up Boxee on your network and choose your files, it may take overnight to sync, at least for me it did, as did several others who posted on the Boxee Forum. I don't know if the new build addressed this.
And even though I have Handbrake and MTR 3.12 and 3.14, I used 'Ripit' to load several movies to a separate file on an external Firewire drive and they look and play great.
Netflix would be great, but I wish it had a queue like MovieBeam did where the movies are already on your hard-drive and you don't pay until you decide to watch.
Or maybe not....

i'm thinking about installing boxee. is boxee a completely different app as the appletv OS (does it run completely separate) or is it installed inside the appletv OS? is the appletv menu the same but with the addition to boxee which will then launch boxee inside of the appletv OS?

It is just another choice along with 'Movies', 'Podcast', etc.
It will be at the top, which can be annoying.
You can relocate it to the bottom, but you'll need to check the Forum and then do a little work.

thanks towertone....

so when there's an update to appletv can you run that normally or do you have to restore appletv to factory settings, update and then reinstall boxee?

You got me on that one. I didn't have it before the last TV update.

Might want to check here, or post a question. They seem very helpful

One more thing....
MacWorld did a great job explaining this, but CNET TV has a good video with Tom Merritt going through the motions.

Enter 'Hack Apple TV' in the search field to find the video.

There were no problems installing it on my Apple TV a few evenings ago. I had to go back and update all the XBMC stuff to get all the channels to show up in the Boxee interface though. My wife and I are classic TV lovers and there's a lot of classic TV, especially on Hulu, so I can see us using Boxee more than we've used the stock Apple TV. It's a great product!

I used a spare Compact Flash card from my SLR and a USB flash reader/writer dongle to create my USB key. I didn't have to reformat the CF card first.

It would have been nice if Boxee automatically presented the Video Calibration panel when starting it for the first time. Everything was squished vertically until I spelunked through the menus and stumbled upon the calibration option.

I have applied an account at boxee, but am on the waiting list. Is there anyone out there who has an account who would be willing to extend an invite to me?
I've already created the ATV USBloader, and installed in on the AppleTV - pretty simple! Just need an account now.
Being able to stream old and new TV shows and movies to the TV on demand will go a long ways towards alleviating the tensions arising when I want to watch Heroes, and the girlfriend wants to watch Prison Break. Now we will be able to watch them anytime we want.
