I just got the new macbook and would like to transfer my entire itunes library from my old powerbook to the new macbook while retaining all my folders/playlists/ratings/etc... how do i do it?
i've researched the web for articles. found one that told me to first transfer the itunes music folder to the new computer then export the library as an xml file (from the old computer) then re-importing it from the new computer (after having to manually change a file directory). i tried it and it actually worked for a while, i saw all my playlists in the original form slowly being transfered but suddenly an error window popped out saying that the playlist failed to transfer. i closed the box by clicking ok and my entire itunes library was intact in the new macbook. i even played songs from it. but when i quit and opened itunes again, nothing was there.

another article told me to change the location of the music folder from the preferences>advanced window in itunes to my external hard disk (i have my music backed up here). then go to file>library>consolidate library so it copies from the external hard disk. i did this but nothing happened when i clicked consolidate...

how do i get this done????

I need some expert help here!!!!

thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Here's one way of doing it using FireWire Target mode::

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/howdoicopymyituneslibraryontomynewmac.html

I just googled "mac transfer itunes library." Like Dave I have no iTMS purchased music. I do,
of course, but I don't let it show. I burn to CD to unprotect the tracks, trash the original DRM-
protected tracks in iTunes, then load the unprotected tracks from CD back into iTunes.

thanks for your reply. however, your method doesn't recreate the playlists/ratings etc... I've got all my songs into the new itunes already but am still having trouble getting my playlists into the new computer. i think it has to do with the path files on the exported library.xml file from the old computer.

i found an article:

http://www.kadavy.ne...itunes-library/

it's a little dated (2005) i don't know if there are new ways to do it now but this is the closest i've got to getting it done. i've tried consolidating my itunes library on the old computer and replacing the folder in the itunes in the new computer but without any success. i just can't get back all my playlists!this is the first 10 or so lines on the library.xml file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Major Version</key><integer>1</integer>
<key>Minor Version</key><integer>1</integer>
<key>Application Version</key><string>8.0.1</string>
<key>Features</key><integer>5</integer>
<key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/Users/desmond/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/</string>
<key>Library Persistent ID</key><string>37FB2B4BA84D8501</string>
<key>Tracks</key>
<dict>

apparently i have to replace the path to be exactly the same as my itunes folder in the new computer, ie:

change it to <key>Music Folder</key><string>file://Macintosh HD/Users/Desmond/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/</string>

but when i import the playlist, it shows up but then an error shows up (error35) saying that my playlist can't be saved. am i doing it wrong? i'm not familiar with programming and stuff, but i the article suggested that i use text wrangler to change the file, which i did to the above.

i've even tried it with Macintosh%20HD/Users/Desmond/Music/itunes/iTunes%20Music/<string> (i'm assuming %20 means 'space')

No luck at all. Or do i have to do this to the entire file?as shown below the path shows up again under every artist in my library. do i need to change this too?

integer>
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Users/desmond/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Songs_%20Ohia/The%20Magnolia%20Electric%20Co/01%20Farewell%20Transmission.m4a</string>

there must be a simpler way! i have 100Gb of music with a whole ton of artists and this will take me forever!!!! and that's assuming that it'll work!

i really need help to get this done! anyone?? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Try this:
start your MB up in target disk mode, connect it to your PB (firewire is good) and in iTunes preferences, under advanced, change the location of your library to your MB. This is an unorthrodox method, but it may work perfectly. I'm not sure how well it will work, but if it works, which it will in all likelyhood, it will work perfectly.
