Don't get me wrong. I really like the smart playlist solution, and it's definitely the work-around for Apple's lack of bookmarking.

I was just saying that, in addition to "track-level bookmarking," Apple should include playlist-level bookmarking. It is an obvious omission. Bookmarking for books - It's a no-brainer.

The smart playlist work-around is elegant, clever, and useful. All I am saying is that it should be unnecessary.

Kirk - thanks for the clarification on 64K mono. I think I understand it now.
sesweitzer - Thanks for recommending AudioBook Builder - works great. Does anyone know of way to get iTunes to display the audiobook chapter titles (like the way it does with AAC enhanced podcasts)?

I agree. We should be able to bookmark in a playlist.

And I wouldn't mind nesting playlists in other playlists so if you change a sequence of songs in one list, all of them are updated. But I guess that is off topic!

Just tried Audiobook builder. That's cool. Thanks - this article and thread has inspired me to pull out all of my old CD based audiobooks and put them in iTunes to sit next to my Audible ones.

This excellent post from 2007 over on Kirkville cleared it all up for me:
www.mcelhearn.com/article.php?story=20070516113423538

Back then you were recommending ripping at 96k stereo set to mono (ie, 48K). Have you since determined that there is no discernible difference in sound quality between 96K and 64K (set to mono)?

Also, Jason Snell & Chris Breen recommend checking the VBR setting for music rips - is there any benefit to VBR when ripping AudioBooks?

G'day Kirk
Great article - I must try the smart playlist suggestion.
I have my book files tagged as Audiobook media and that is how they show up in iTunes. They don't come up under the Audiobook section on my iPod however. Have I missed something?
Cheers
Steve

Does anyone know why the "Remember Position" option is not selectable? I must have a setting wrong. Thanks

Do you mean in iTunes after you import from Audiobook builder? For me, it is not selectable either, but it is defaulted to on, so I don't mind.

If you are using ABB, when you started the project in ABB, did you select M4B as the format (the default is M4A)? I think you need to do that for bookmarks to work. I don't think you can set this after you start a project either - I think it has to be done during the initial set up.

If you are just ripping on your own, you may have to set the type to Audiobook in iTunes.

Thanks for the hints you provided. I've used them successfully to listen to my audio books. However, lately, the playlist scheme is not working. I have noticed that no matter what, my iPhone plays every other chapter consistently. I saved and re-saved the playlist repeatedly always making sure the order is correct, but it never fails. The phone will start playing the playlist correctly, but around the 4th or 5th track, it starts skipping every other track. Any ideas about what's going on?
