I don't know if you're being sarcstic, or living under a rock. The Black in black Friday means this is a very big day for retailers that determines if, and how much they will go into the black (i.e. make a profit) for the year.

And you don't think that calling a good day Black Friday seems even a teensy bit dissonant?

Black Friday is a new concept to me in the UK. When I first saw the term, I assumed that it was a bad thing (but now I know it's a good day for buying!). I'm not sure "Super Cuddly Friday" has quite the same impact though!

If this "shopping event" is anything like previous years it is nothing to get excited about. You can order everything through third party retailers for cheaper with no tax than you can on an "apple sale" day.
apple is the most expensive place to buy apple stuff from. Even on their retail holiday sales day.

If you follow the links to (http://store.apple.com/au/browse/campaigns/blackfridayteaser?mco=MjgxODY5OA), Apple's "special one-day shopping event" doesn't seem to offer much more than extended retail store hours and free shipping.
To quote:
"Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one-day-only Christmas shopping event. You’ll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas – all with free delivery."
Bad marketing copy or bad offer?

Of course it does, especially in contrast with the 1929 Black Friday (which was really Black Thursday).

Black Friday seems even a teensy bit dissonant?

On "Black Tuesday," the stock market crashed. In "Black Sunday," a blimp is positioned over the Super Bowl with a bomb underneath. Why should I be excited about Black Friday again?

You can always celebrate the alternative "Buy Nothing Day" instead. I'm not a buy nothing purist, but I do like the idea of not shopping for Christmas presents on the day after Thanksgiving. I didn't buy my turkey on the day after Halloween.

It's retail speak... they have their own jargon, just like computer geeks. Ask a retail person what POS stands for, and you'll get a very different answer than what the average person on the street would give you.
