I tried the suggestion ,but I STILL get unreadable files error, refusing to import(/users/myname/pictures/iphoto library/100-0011.jpg.) I don't understand this at all. Isn't a jpg. a jpg. no matter what was used to create it?By the way, what is/how do you do "icon mode".
Thanking you again

Try opening picture file, select all then double click on one photo and Preview should open with that one selected photo
large and all other photos in thumbnails. Select all again and "Save As" .tif files. Then try the procedure I described last
evening. Again, good luck!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. It appears that in Tiger one cannot "select all" thumbnails while in Preview, you should however, have the thumbnails on right side of your Preview window. What you would have to do in that case is to
select the photos one by one and change them to a .tif format. Before you go crazy doing that, see if changing the format
on one photo works and allows it to be imported. Also, by 'icon mode' I simply meant how you were viewing the files
by icon or by list (my fave as it takes up less space).

That means you also selected the iPhoto Library and was trying to import it into itself. Just select the loose image files and drag them into the open iPhoto window. Once the photos have been imported into iPhoto you can delete the copy that's in the Pictures folder.
