When I have this problem I would usually just change the image to "view as icon" and that would do the trick. I always get a reply telling me that worked. These tips are great though, thanks.

Does this have anything to do with the "Attachments->Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" option under the Edit menu?

I've also found that clicking the "Attach" button instead of dragging and dropping seems to work better.
That could be in my imagination, though.

I, too, have had these same problems. My solution is to put the photos into iPhoto, then select them. Next, I click the "Email" button at the bottom of the window and it opens a new Mail window. Just fill in the usual info and send it. This has always worked with Windows users.

This solution does seem to work.

No, it doesn't. That's to prevent Mail sending extra Mac-only 'junk" files to other users. Moreover, that menu is incorrectly named: Microsoft does deserve almost all the flak is gets, but in this case, despite the implication of that menu wording, it's NOT to blame. Those files are ALSO "unfriendly" to people with all sorts of Unix boxes, such as BSD, Solaris, etc. -- and to Linux users. In fact, to everyone who's not on a Mac.

But you'd best leave that one ticked, and the option labelled "Insert Attachments at End of Message" as well.

This sounds like a good solution to the wrong problem. I like to have the photos embedded. That was my objective so you could immediately see the photos.
If I were to suggest a solution, I would ask that Microsoft or someone to write a solution to allow the recipients to save the photos. While the suggested solution (don't embed the photo's) works, it strikes me as perverse.

Another big headache Apple gives us is that Mail displays the image of some attached jpg's and pdf's (even when not embedded), instead of iconizing them, which makes it difficult to read a message. I've had email with ten attachments, all pdf's or jpg's and some get displayed, others just iconized, and what was once a nice list becomes a mess that is difficult to deal with. What's worse is that sometimes the attached files are of substantial size and I don't want mail spending 5 seconds decoding a jpg which only obscures the text of the message anyway!
Oh yes, never forget to use the "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" checkbox!

Mail Attachment Iconizer: http://lokiware.info...hments-Iconizer
A $14.99 utility that should already be built into Mail. As hautster points out, there is an option to right (ctrl) click and 'view as icon'. This simply makes the attachment an 'attachment' rather than an inline graphic.
Very good utility. I use it many times per day

When this has come up I have instructed people to right click on the photo and choose save as (or something similar). This has always seemed to work or maybe they just stopped bothering me.

Don't underestimate my imagination. It's very active - it could have gotten you too. ;)

Since Mail clients are not created =
My bro sends AutoCAD, StudioMAX, and of course the usual .jpg, .gif, etc. to PC'ers and Macster folks and doesn't have time to fiddle around. His 100% sure fire way, as -Chris mentioned, is to Zip those puppies: NO problems...
