Is there any way to use the operating system to password protect individual folders in OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5? If not, is there software available to do it? TIA

You can use the Disk Utility application to create an encrypted disc image. This will function like a cross between a folder and a removable disc. You can double-click on the image and it will prompt you for your password. After authenticating, the image will mount as if you had just inserted a CD or pen drive. You can and and remove items, and when you're finished, simply "eject" the image to secure the data again.
