I wish fonts had built in metadata like music MP3 files that include a small preview "album cover", style listing, and family album.

You can get all of that if you work between Font Book and the Finder (10.5). Finder's Coverflow mode shows you font previews, and Font Book will let you categorize fonts by collections.

Font Book is pretty nice, but for all my experience dealing with with OS X, I still have trouble getting the system's Helvetica to play nice with Helvetica Neue. I wish there was an easy way to permanently substitute the system version without Apple apps (iPhoto, Dashboard, etc.) completely freaking out.

To be fair, I've never given Font Book a thorough chance- I jumped happily into Linotype's free FontExplorer X when it debuted, kicking Suitcase to the curb. But I have to at least put a plug in here for FontExplorer. It really is the iTunes of font management, and it works beautifully. AND it offers the same functionality described in this article.
If you're not already invested in Font Book, at least give FontExplorer a chance before doing so.

yes I would go for FontExplorer as well and the best part is that it is a free download. it is the only font management we use at work

FontBook works well in 10.4.11 on about a dozen Macs in my group. Haven't tried FontExplorer yet, though...

I second the vote for Linotype Font Explorer. It lets you create smart sets and add comments. So if you have "Christmas" in the comment is will put all your Christmas fonts in the same folder. It also lets you install and uninstall fonts and have a custom view of multiple fonts.

(1) I wish to know the functions of each folder in the Collection column of the Font Book -- "Font Book Help" in Help pull-down menu does not tell much.
(2) I want to use only a few fonts in my Microsoft/WORD and ENTOURAGE. I often use "disabler" function to select some fonts to limit them to appear in those application programs. What is its difference from "remove" function?
(3) Such selection of those fonts with "disable" function disappear some month later, and I had to redo all of re-selecting with "disable" function. I wish to know how to keep such selection permanently.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone can kindly help me on those issues.
Best, Tak (utsumi@columbia.edu)

Another thumbs-up for FontExplorer from me. I can't believe such a great app is also free. They make money by having a built-in font store interface to buy fonts directly from Linotype -- something' I've been happy to do a few times to kick some coin their way and make the development of such a great font app worth their while. Thanks Linotype!

The long awaited update to FontExplorer X was released the other day (I'm suprised MacWorld didn't report it - or maybe I just missed it) .. FontExplorer X Pro .. and unfortunately it's no longer a freebie .. $79.00 .. $39.00 if purchased by the end of February .. it includes CS4 updates for InDesign and Illustrator .. plus all new plug-ins for Photoshops CS3 and CS4 .. also a QuarkXPress 8 plug-in.
Other enhancements too.

A free 30-day trial is avaiable .. www.fontexplorerx.com/mactrial/

Linotype also rolled out a new FontExplorer X Server app

I was reinventing the wheel when I started looking for better ways and found this hint. I tried it and it looked good, at first.

A minor complaint is that Font Book breaks down fonts into subfamilies, like half a dozen for the different weights and widths of Futura. I want all my Futura fonts in one folder.

More bothersome is that some fonts were not loaded into Font Book, even though Font Book can open them, so they didn't appear in the exported folder tree. Identifying and adding the missing fonts was a pain....

If I don't find a better solution I'm going back to reinventing the wheel.
