you already answered your own question... they signed a contract. do you think they have a choice about what kind of opinion they have about "illegal" downloading?! no way the record company is going to let the artist come out in favor of online sharing.
the point is that things are changing, and the record companies are grasping and clawing at anything they can because they know the end is near.
why don't artists just put their music up for free download, you ask? they do! those artists that are deemed "not good enough" to be signed are doing better than they ever have before thanks to free online downloads. no longer do you have to record a CD and travel around the country to get the music out to the people. no longer are you a "nobody" just because you aren't signed to a major label. this is the future of music and the big labels are proving it by releasing free tracks to try to keep up with this new movement. soon there will be no need for them and it will only be ticketmaster and live nation that are profiting greatly off the artists!
