PassPhrase is now one of my favorite apps.
Had some friends over for a Christmas get-together and we ended up playing it most of the night. I'm already looking forward to the next rematch.
All this entertainment and versatility from just a phone.....simply awesome!

I agree with Dreyfus that Deep Green is a good-looking chess app, but it's not the only one - or the best available. (The similarity to my username is pure coincidence, btw.)
DG is the prettiest, I think, and will make very casual chess players smile. But ChessGenius is the King of iPhone/iPod Touch chess. It's good looking and has much deeper tools for analysis and review. You can also email games (in PGN format) from the device.
It's also the only (?) iPhone chess app that works in both portrait and landscape mode.
I've tinkered around with most of the chess apps available and this one is best of breed.

Well, I have all chess apps (I am aware of) and agree that ChessGenius is the strongest player, but it is more a shrunk desktop app than a "designed for iPhone" app. There is just too much info on the screen and this limits usability on the road quite a bit - I use it at home though (it still has a much better layout than e.g. Caissa and Chess Classics). For a quick play on the go Deep Green is not that weak - once you set the AI to the highest level, it will certainly beat most people with ease. The default setting is really for absolute beginners. What makes it really shine is it's beautiful, simple and clean design and the great usability. My remark (as quoted in the article) was about apps designed exclusively for the iPhone - Richard Lang's ChessGenius does exist for all (?) mobile platforms.

Actually chess boards are square :-) It does rearrange the additional info fields and controls, but there is no change in the usable size of the board and pieces when switching between portrait and landscape, so it does not really help too much. But I would love, if Deep Green could exchange game data via email (or a server) too...

I am fond of word games and logic apps. The Crypto Word Hunter and Crypto Word Scramble are great for that. Cryptocybernetics also has a neat logic game "Cupid" well, or "Crypto Cupid" as they have the really inane need to stick "Crypto" in front of all the names in the App Store they have. I also like Suduko, what can I say. I haven't found a favorite yet. And "Peg Jump". Peg Jump is another logic game. There are more complex versions of it out there though and I'll be looking at them soon.

Some great apps have been mentioned here. I want to nominate a couple of apps that should be on everyone's iPhone and iPod touch - they could save your day, your sanity, even your or a loved one's life. Emergency Kit, Be Prepared, Stolen Wallet and On The Road from Creative Coefficent are defintely worth consideration. In one place, you can put essential information about you, your health insurance, doctor, key emergency contacts, even your blood type, so that an emergency worker could get vital information that could save your life in an emergency. The apps also are rich with chapters of information on what to do in case of a medical or financial emergency, anything from helping someone with a heart attack to what to do if your identity is stolen. These are definitely worth the money, and worth a look on the iTunes Store.

Loan managers are not covered in the favorite apps.
I really like Loan Plan in this category : it's very smooth and powerful. You have a loan simulator, a credit capacity and an option to save loans. Amortization tables are well organized and can be emailed in different file types, PDF included.
I also liked Air Sharing which is already one of the favorites.

AP's Mobile News is my favorite in the News category. It caches the articles (negating the need for the internet); so you have something to read on the subway (where it's too noisy to hear an audiobook anyway). They need to add 'auto' caching (to update all categories at once) and a science category to make it perfect.

My favorite apps:
TanZen, Last.fm, FStream (though I use Internet RadioBox which i got when it was free if I didn't have that I'd use FStream because it is free), BeatMaker, WikiTap
The ABCNews app would be a favorite with some tweaks (higher quality video, stories by categories, weather news by region).

My favorite iPhone apps are those that keep my 2 year old daughter occupied for a short bit. If the app would actually teach her something int he process, that would be great. One app that does this is call I See Ewe. I can teach your toddler over 50 different words through its two built in games. My daughter loves it.
