Review: iPhone games for small kids

Buggled from Aspyr is fun -- the idea is to keep your fingers on as many ladybugs as you can without letting them go. Bugdom 2 from Pangea is every bit as fun as it was on the Mac, and Brian Greenstone recent developed a new control scheme that makes the game much more playable. Little ones also get a kick out of iNeko, which is free -- an iPhone update to a classic that started life way back on the black and white Mac platform. My 8 year old loves iFart, though it's quite noisy and rude. But then again, so is he. So am I. Apple, tree, etc.

I have a three year old boy and I've been handing him my iPhone to distract him or keep him entertained for the past year. It has come in handy many many many times. Before 2.0, I'd use youtube. At a wedding rehearsal I handed him my iPhone and searched his favorite cartoons on youtube. Voila, instantly he stopped fussing and focused on the cartoon.
Nowadays, he likes to play the game called Labyrinth, but many levels are too difficult for him (being only 3)
Another great solution (IMO) would be ripping a DVD and putting it on your iPhone/iPod Touch. Like having a portable DVD player, only very compact.

Leapfrog Leapster 2 $50
Leapfrog Diji $60
Pre-owned Nintendo DS $80
iPhone $300 and shatters into a million little pieces when dropped... oh yea like I am going to hand over an iPhone to 5 year old.

Missing the point: priceless.
The point is not to give your child an iPhone; it's to have a couple of games on hand to entertain him when the situation arises. My 18-month old son thinks Ocarina is great but I don't let him run around the house with my iPhone.

Wait until you are distracted for two seconds and your 18 month old leaps up off the sofa and launches your iPhone into the toilet. And don't think it can't happen. Man those little suckers are fast. And strong too. No matter what your grip is on the iPhone they will snatch that thing out of your hand, and hurl it across the living room faster than Capt. Kirk can say Warp Factor 7 Mr. Sulu.
A bit touchy this morning aren't we. Didn't get that Nikon D90 from Santa? Seriously though I really did not miss the point of the article; My point was that there are far better, appropriate, and entertaining products than a iPhone. Products specifically designed for the rug rat set.

[DISCLAIMER - we are the company behind the game Moo Shake!]
Our first Kids game Moo Shake! is doing very well, but not enough to knock scoops off the number 1 spot in kids games :-(
We recent received some awesome photos of a 4 year playing our game with his 11 month old cousin beside him completely engrossed. See the pics at http://www.flickr.co...57611935769841/

"iPhone $300 and shatters into a million little pieces when dropped... oh yea like I am going to hand over an iPhone to 5 year old." I understand your concern, but surprisingly I hand out my iPod Touch to kids on a regular basis and so far so good. Of course for some I need to stress it's fragile, but overall had great experiences with them.
On the recommendation list, I can vouch for MooShake, it seems to be attractive to kids ranging from 2 to 6, even if it's not going to played with over 10' (which is plenty!). Peekaboo and Bus are both very cute, Peekaboo has a lite version so easy to check if interesting to your kids, it has lovely drawings, and a barn with interactive animals inside. Bus is a bit more interesting, it's an intercative book playing the song "wheels on the bus", great drawings too, music is in multiple languages & musical instruments that you can choose but best part is that you can record your own voice. My niece loved that!
An odd one in my game list that worked miracles with my niece was "Subway", it's a puzzle game, and she started playing when she was 5 1/2 and it's one of her favorite game son my iPod. Also lite version so easy to check. Great for brainy kids.
Thanks to everyone who is contributing to this list, I'm always on the lookout for games or education games for kids so really useful to know what others have tried & tested, and liked. (on education side, Word Magic is worth a try).

Congrats on your 1st game, huge success with my niece when it first came out. She 'played' it for 30' straight the first time I showed it to her. She's a little bit over the target age now (6) but still enjoys taking it for a run. Little ones enjoy just shaking the device to hear/see new results, while older kids like to 'solve' the animal puzzle. Would be great to have additional combos.
Looking forward to more!
