Not in front of my AppleTV right now, but I thought that you could organize movies with the Genre tag. In your picture example, this seems redundant. Assuming that you can use both methods, I can see your first example being useful... first browse to the Action genre, then have a grouping of "James Bond" movies.

I stopped updating my Apple TV. After updating one time it took away the ability to put it on standby by holding the middle button for 6 seconds. You have to access it through the menu options.
I wish there was a sleep timer too.
Also, can't you already organize your Movies and other media into folders?
I have my TV shows organized, haven't gotten to the point where I need to organize my movies, but eventually I probably will by genre. Even though 90% or more are comedy....... which will almost be useless to organize by genre lol.
Anyway, does anybody know if you can turn your Apple TV on standby in 2.3 by pressing and holding the middle button still?? I hate having to go through the menu to put it on standby.

took me a minute (being away from my ATV) to figure out what you were talking about.
From what I can see on the screen shot you have a movie that is tagged in the Sci-Fi & Fantast Genre that is in a show/folder called Comedy.
This is cool, but instead of editing my media tags i might just prefer putting movies into playlists since that is supported now.
neat tidbit though, wouldn't have known this was possible before reading this.

I have been gradually building my media catalog with downloaded purchases as well as physically bought DVDs ripped via HandBrake. The best recent little utility I've stumbled upon is MetaX which allows you to rapidly update any number of the info fields (included dvd artwork) via an online database...similar to how you can auto-pull info for music via the iTunes store. Both are worth checking out...

Man, I just downloaded MetaX to try out, and it looks like a VERY useful tool, but it is SLOOOOOW.
Just one movie has taken so far about 2 minutes, all just to add metadata?
Wish it were faster, I have hundreds of tv shows and movies.

Edit: Even better- now the movie I have edited, won't import back into iTunes. EXCELLENT.
I'll try rebooting. sigh

Edit2: Ok, apparently it did import to iTunes, but it sorted by "Guy Thing" not "A Guy Thing" so it took me a bit to find.


Why is it so slow? Looks like it copies the original, what for?

This still works by holding the play/pause button for 6 seconds, the key is that you have to have the menu on the screen in order for it to work. IOW, hit the menu button so that the menu screen comes up then hit the play/pause button for 6 seconds.

Ahhhhh.
Well my problem is this:
I go to bed, turn on the Apple TV/ TV- set the TV sleep timer for whatever and wish the Apple TV had the same sleep time feature....
When I wake up in the morning, my TV is off, and my Apple TV is on, so I press and hold the play/pause button until it turns off. Does this mean if I update, all I'll have to do is press the menu button a couple times to get back to the main menu and then press and hold that same button?
If so, that's not too bad. I was under the impression (before reading this) that I'd have to turn the TV back on, navigate through the menu options and click standby just to turn the thing off....

Yes Matt, thats what I do, if I press the play/pause and it won't go into standby I press the menu once and then try again. It's not as easy as it was before, I'm not sure why they changed that functionality but...

This is a great tip, but I'm not sure how I'll use it, since Apple's already got another mechanism for browsing by genre. I'm going to start by breaking out all the logical groupings (sequels and series'), but I have a feeling that with hundreds of movies, it's not going to make that much of difference. I may very well end up creating 26 shows called 'A', 'B', 'C', etc, and use this feature to give myself a letter by letter view of my library. I wish it weren't an all-or-nothing sort of deal, though. Sometimes it's nice to be able to scroll through the entire list.

Does anyone know a program LIKE Meta X, but that runs quicker?
I love how it pulls in information (even about sitcoms) but I don't like that it takes so long to write the metadata to the file. I would have thought it would just add the data to the existing file... Anyone?
I have every Seinfeld episode and The Office episode (ripped from my DVD's) but sometimes it's hard to tell what each episode is about with just the name of the episode.
ANY HELP?

Re: Meta X
1) Matt, water yourself and try to grow just a little patience. Some of the meta-tags are not accessible so it recreates the file inserting the tag.
2) I have found queuing up 25 files, setting all the tags and then walking away to do other things is the easiest approach. I also have it set to move the duplicate to the trash. If you don't have a ton of drive space you'll need to be sure to frequently empty the trash and limit the number you put in queue.
3) Meta X is as fast of an application as I have found though it still isn't an instant tagger. It is based (as are all the good ones I've seen) upon the Atomic Parsley code.

In that case perhaps I'll just use this for my TV series episodes. Having every Seinfeld episode (well over 100) and The Office is hard to remember what all of them are about by a title sometimes. Movies are obvious, so I only need the album artwork for those.

Oh well. :D
