I just tried moving my dock to the right side and all the icons did automatically move aside.
Returning the dock to the bottom of the screen automatically moved the icons closer to the edge again.
I expect that the automatic repositioning occurs because my view options for the desktop is to keep items arranged by kind. (under "View" -> Show View Options"

Have you ever seen Desktop Wrap? It still works, and can really help keep your desktop organized. It can place your icons and sort them, and it can even let you set a custom arrangement if you like to keep a certain group of icons on your desktop. It can save your arrangement to an Applescript that you can trigger with a keystroke if you have Spark or Proxi or something, or just keep it in the dock so desktop icon cleanup is just a click away.

Doh! Entirely my fault. Rob is a holy and blameless creature.

Wait, wait, wait . . . hiding the dock is a bit "hacky"? Since when?

Only "hacky" if you want to hide it without the system's knowing it's hidden.

"Why this doesn’t happen automatically is an open question"
Least surprise?
