itunes quality, is it just me?

i sometimes play music upstairs through a stereo from my g3 dual boot imac. with similar bitrates the music just seems to sound better when playing with itunes 2 from os9 than it does from itunes 6 in os x. has anyone else here noticed this (if anyone still uses or remembers 9) or is it just one of those things?
