I am new to Mac's and their software. Less than six months ago, I purchased a MacBook Pro along with IWork08. I now see that IWork09 is available but only at full price -- no updates and no credit for having purchased the earlier version. Is this typical of the way Apple works ??

yep, but given the price the of the software it still costs less buying the full product then the upgrade for other application suites. If there's nothing compelling in iWork 09 then just forgo the update. I'm on the fence myself, I'll probably skip iWork 09

Apple does have a free 30-day trial for the 09 version of iWork. You might want to try the new version to judge for yourself if the upgrade is worth it. A slight warning is advised. If you use a file from 08, you can bring it up in 09 and change it, but if you save a file with 09 you cannot go back and open it in 08 once you have saved it in 09's format. So if you are going to just check it out save the new 09 file with a different name in case you are not going to "update"
