iTunes crashes with scratched cd's on importing

I got some audiobooks (CD) at the library and they malfunction ocassionally when I try to import them so I can transfer them to my iPod. Basically iTunes crashes and I have to "force quit" it.

You can see the scratches in them and I tried cleaning them with Novus 2 Fine Scratch Remover, which sometimes works, but not always.

Is there a way to just skip a section during the download? Or any other suggestions. I realize that a section that is missed may change the book but maybe a little loss wouldn't be so bad.....
