Another great oldie you can still get today is Glider Pro, thanks to John Calhoun

http://homepage.mac....ider%20PRO.html

He even hosts Glider 4 for Classic Macs!

Thanks, John!

Oh, by the way. If you're interested in taking a walk down memory lane, check out Old Mac Game Software. A great site with slideshows, movies and screenshots of black and white Mac games, even some sound files.

"A 'Mac game' is a game that?s some combination of first, best, or only on the Mac. Such games are rare these days."

Not rare, more like non-existent... At least when you're talking about games from anything coming close to a developer that actually does quality games. Where games ARE the focus of the company, not just one category in what they produce.

The last time a game would have qualified for the listing was when Bungie was still it's own company and was working on the original Halo game. That was originally intended to be a simultaneous Mac and Windows release. Then Microsoft purchased Bungie and that idea was first on the chopping block. From that point forward, I don't recall any game being released either first for the Mac platform, or at the same time as for Windows. Every decent game to come to the Mac since then has been a multi-year later port from either a game console or the Windows world.

Long gone are the days when Mac users could contemplate gaming along with their Windows using friends. Not to mention that it's been possible to buy a computer built to play games (running Windows) for far, far less than a Mac (that could try to play games)... I'm talking about a system with at least hardware RAID and SLI video cards (at least two). Apple's onboard drive controllers (for towers/desktops) don't offer hardware RAID, it's software. So, if you want to build a RAID 5 array, for speed and safety, you're out of luch unless you want to spend even more money.

Until apple actually becomes serious about working with game developers/publishers they're always going to be multi-year later after thoughts. Which, in the real world means that it's not really financial feasible for publishers to even go after such a minute market. This is evident by how many games are available for the other platforms/consoles compared to the Mac.

Spaceward ho is still alive and well. Can be found at deltatao.com (29.95$), who I believe are porting dark castle 1 and 2.
SH is OSX and runs daily on my machine.

other greats: Shufflepuck (runs on OS9 or in calssic) found on abandonware-france.org, or other abandonware sites. Tehre may be other versions?
you don't know jack?
and many others

While I have a few Mac games myself, the fact is that if you really want to play good games... get a 360, Wii, or PS3. Control is better and you never have to worry if your system can meet the specs.

I just wanna give a shout out to Dark Forces, a demo of which was on a CD that came with my Mac 7500. The quality of the graphics, depth of levels, and story raised the bar, IMO. Thank goodness for the work being done on DarkXL, which promises to resurrect it from the dead.

I agree completely! Those games from Delta Tao were/are fantastic! I love[d] also the overall style of Delta-Tao's products,
the humorous manuals and the firm's statement on sw piracy (it made me the most faithful customer, and I would die rather than be accessory in pirating their sw; something I surely can't say for the companies that go the lousy, windozesque way of sw-activation!).
Unfortunately, Strategic Conquest can be played only on PowerPc (or older) Macs in Classic, i.e., with Mac OS X <=10.4.
But the good news is that Spaceward Ho! is still available for purchase and runs on present Macs/OS X versions!

Dark Castle on my 512Ke was the best. I accomplished little during my 3rd year in law school because of that game.

Couldn't agree more with Crystal Quest.
Three game I would add are:
[1] Spectre
[2] PhraseCraze
[3] Arkanoid (which I still play, thanks to vMac)

For the Mac Plus: Shufflepuck Cafe, Dark Castle, Beyond Dark Castle, and Star Trek: The Real Version (which was one of the first network games played over an LocalTalk network).

Color Macs with CD: Myst, Riven, The 7th Guest.

But before the Mac, the Apple II had one of the best games, Karateka, which pre-dated Prince of Persia.

Yes, the Marathon series was great.

But how about:
1. Ancient Art of War;
2. Ancient Art of War at Sea (Yarr!);
3. Masters of Orion
4. Masters of Orion II (not III, it sucked)
5. Myth
6. Myth II (awesome, but not III)

The only game I ever play is Seahaven Towers.
Waiting for it to be released on iPhone. Freecell is no substitute.
