I think I broke it. I followed the steps above, but I wanted to get rid of the pesky . in the side bar. Little did i know that when I deleted that ., I was messing up my trash can. The trash won't empty, and I can't add the . back because it says .Trash is reserved by the system. Any help in getting my trash to work again would be great.

If you accidentally remove your .Trash, it'll be automatically recreated if you log out and back in again.

Yes, a logout/login should fix it. I didn't include information on renaming it because (a) it's hard to do anyway, and (b) it's not a good thing to do :)

That period before the Trash annoyed me. So I sought to remove it. Easy steezy. While you are in the .Trash info pane, click on the 'Name & Extension' twistie and just delete the period.

Generally, once posted, things live on indefinitely; you've posted the correction, so anyone reading here will see the full story. (And, hey, it's not like I've ever posted something that was completely wrong ... not today, at least so far!) :)

I have a question regarding iTunes. Periodically files in the library appear with an '!" at the side of them, and if I try to play that track, the application will tell me that the file is not available (and has a status of locked), so I have to go to my backup, find the iTunes Music folder, the album and the track, open the backup file, and all is in order, until the next time.
What causes this? Is it some time of permissions issue? How can I eliminate this problem?
Thanks,
Ken

Why oh why would you bother, other than to tweak your geekness (which is admittedly reason enough)? I haven't touched the trash icon in about 10 years... Command-Delete to delete and Command-Shift-Delete to empty. Nothing is easier.

"Make sure the Finder’s Path Bar is visible (View -> Show Path Bar). The Path Bar will appear at the bottom of the Finder window"
I can't do that. The Hide Status Bar is grayed out in View, and no path is in sight at the bottom of the window...

Because my hand is not on the keyboard at the time - it's on the mouse because I'm doing some file maintenance.
