Hmm, those didn't seem to work -- I just see the file name. Use the Attach Files box at the bottom of the post; you can only attach one file per post.

I don't see the Attach Files box in either Firefox or Safari...

Oops, my bad. I thought that was generally available, but I guess not. Let's try it this way...when you open a regular Finder window, do you see the path bar at the bottom?

No, and I don't think I ever saw that. I assume there is a general preference for that feature that I turned down at some point, but where???

In the View menu (in 10.5), there's a Show Path Bar option. If you're not running 10.5, you won't see this item.

Aaah, here we go. I'm running 10.4.11....

This brings up an issue I have and that prevents me to switch to 10.5, already installed on another partition and impatiently waiting. For me, one main feature of Firefox and Safari is that they can start up from their previously opened tabs (automatically in Firefox, manually in Safari). This feature is essential to me, so I'd need to copy the file(s) where this info is stored from one partition tot the other. But where is this file?

Thanks,
Chris

Well, the feature still works fine in 10.5. If you simply upgrade in place from 10.4.11 to 10.5, then nothing will get overwritten, and things should just magically open as you left them in 10.4. (I can't confirm this, of course, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. An upgrade doesn't overwrite any user settings or preferences files for third-party applications. Safari might be a slightly different story, but I wouldn't think it'd lose your personal settings.)

I see what you mean, but it's not my issue. I will not upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5. I will keep 10.4 in one partition and use the already installed 10.5 in another. If the "feature" resides in the browser's preference file, as you seem to imply, it will be easy...

For Firefox at least, everything about the program resides in your user's Library -> Application Support -> Firefox -> Profiles -> [random words] folder. In theory (untested, make a backup!), you should be able to take the contents of the folder from your 10.4 install and place them in the folder in your 10.5 install -- don't replace the actual folder, as the [random worsd] will differ between the two.

I've never tried this, though, but it should work...famous last words :)

I think I broke it. I followed the steps above, but I wanted to get rid of the pesky . in the side bar. Little did i know that when I deleted that ., I was messing up my trash can. The trash won't empty, and I can't add the . back because it says .Trash is reserved by the system. Any help in getting my trash to work again would be great.

I took a look at the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file to see if we could modify the name shown in the sidebar. There's an entry for every user item that's added to the sidebar, including .Trash, and there's a name parameter for each item. The text in the name parameter is just text, not directly related the actual location of the sidebar item.

Unfortunately, changing .Trash to Trash didn't do anything (didn't break my Trash either) - meaning the name parameter isn't actually used for anything ... currently. I would have hopes that future updates to OS X would use this rather than the folder name.

I can't think of any reason to add the trash icon to the Sidebar, either. Having it in one place provides certainty about actually having deleted an item you intended to. Seems to me that multiple locations would be confusing.

I have a related question. How do I see what is in the trash on another drive and how do I empty that without having to bring up Disk Utility and erasing the whole thing? My thumb drives keep filling up with trashed files for example and I end up with half a useful drive. Thanks. Al

I followed the instructions and get the Trash folder in HD>Users>myname and then nothing happens when I try the File>Add to Sidebar part. Not only that, but the new .Trash folder disappears when I close then reopen a Finder window.
I'm on 10.5.4 Leopard.
help..please. I really would love to have this option working.
Thanks in advance.
