iPod crashes when plugged into powered speakers

Both of my 8 GB iPods crash when I plug them into a powered speaker and play a file that I recorded into my iMac from an audio to usb device.

Other files play no problemo from the ipods and another 1 GB ipod into the powered speakers and the recorded file plays from two other computers via the ipod (usb connected) and then played through itunes.

What happens is that you select the recording and the iPod goes back to the first menu (music).

Anybody seen this previously? It is repeatable.
